Paying for orientation?

Okay....so I was just accepted to the University of North Texas as a transfer student and found out there is a mandatory orientation. No problem. So I call the school to find out the dates and the woman tells me when they are and I start to schedule my date and she says, "And you can just pay on the day of orientation." I was like, "Pay what?" and she said that there is a $58 fee that must be paid. I've already paid $50 for the application fee. Don't you think this is a little much for orientation? I asked, "well what do I get for my $58?" She said you get to meet with an adviser and register for classes. I really feel like this should be free. The junior college I have been going to didn't charge for this. I mean, at least give us a t-shirt or something...jeez! Just wanted to see what you guys thought about this!

For me, its a burden to pay this orientation for students attempting to join a University. Though its okay to be mandatory for as long as it should be free. But before that, where does the fee go? Should benefit the students since the subject orientation plays a role for the student and not for the University. Just a point of view that paying this orientation fee credits much to the student's participation and student satisfaction.

I'm going to try to find that out....exactly where is this money going to? I don't mean to be a cheapskate but I'm a stay at home mom as well so we're living on one income. I always account for where every cent goes! Hopefully they'll have some answers for me :)

Thats what I thought too! Such a rip. But its a reputable college and about 10 mins from my house...but that just really rubbed me the wrong way!

Oh my god! This sounds like just another way to get money from us students. Both CCD or UC at Denver offered a few orientation, and there was no charge to talk to my advisor. It should be noted that my advisor at CCD was less than useful, especially my entry advisor. He kept trying to talk me into business administration, something I never wanted to deal with ever again. It sounds like a complete ripoff to me.
