I love the original gone with the wind vivien lee was the best scarlet also very beautiful and her clothing in the film was excellent, and I dont really think they'll ever be able to top the original, but if film makers decided to make a new big screen version of gone with the wind I think so far the closest we have to a vivian lee type for today is catherine zeta Jones, who do you think should play scarlet if they made a new version of the film?

i cannot think of anyone else other than Scarlet's namesake Scarlett Johansson.
She would be perfect for the part.. If not her, then i think Kiera Knightly would be the next best choice.

What a disgrace if they remake that movie... it was perfection and you cant change or improve prefection... and if they try...they should be trampled by Gen.Sherman himself! They tried when they did the sequel - Scarlett with Timothy Bottoms as Rhett and was it Kathy Downs as Scarlet? The whole show was pathetic and a total dishonor to GWTW. You can't replace Vivian Leigh and Clark Gable... you just can't do it. Actors/ress's these days don't have the dedication and heart and soul that actors/ress's had back in those days. Now they are all about the money and the self-righteous arrogance that HOllywood does for them.

But that's my point... no stars of today can even come close to the preformances of those stars of the past... so there would be no one that could play the part and do it justice for what it is.

And another thing... back then.. look at the amazing special effects and backgrounds and things like that that they did with what limited knowledge and ability they had back then... compared to what they can do now. back then it was all done with limited (based on what we have today) abilities, physically and photographicaly etc. That scene where they were trying to get out of the burning city through the train depot... that was really a movie set (forget which tv show it was for) that they needed to tear down, so they burned it down for GWTW scene... talk about using what you have! Today it'd been a photographic, computerized depiction view!

I just had a flashback of "The Wiz," a remake of "The Wizard of Oz," staring Diana Ross as Dorothy, Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow, Nipsy Russel as the Tinman, and Richard Pryor as the "Wiz." It was a curiosity, and did not win any awards that I know of.
I also have serious doubts if I would want to see such a movie. Maybe if they made it in 3d animation The only people I can think of to voice Scarlet are no longer available

I think I see Scarlet Johanson in the roll. I know she is not a brunette, but she has those classic old movie hollywood looks. She has a classic southern bell look and dressed for the part she would do quite well. Catherine Zeta Jones is also very beautiful but I don't know if I see Southern Bell in her.

I was about to say "Frank my dear, I don't give a damn" but someone has beaten me to it.
Firstly I hope that they never decide to make a remake. The film is perfection and although seriously old is a true classic which doesn't deserve the remake treatment. Although knowing Hollywood I wouldn't be suprised if someone decided to try.
Id they did decide to do a remake I would like to see Zeta Jones or Rachel Weiss as I think they would be perfect in the role. Stretching the question a bit further to take on the question who would play Rhett, well I would plump for George Clooney.

That is a hard question, I could only come up with 2 actresses, Charlize Theron of course she would have to dye her hair and Ginnifer Goodwin. I think Catherine Zeta Jones is too old. I believe Scarlett is suppose to be a teenager.

Frankly my dear, I can't think of a single person who could fill Vivien Leigh's corset in a GWTW remake...lol! If I absolutely HAD to choose one of today's actresses to play Scarlet, one that comes to mind is Kate Beckinsale. I think there are a few other actresses who may have been suitable several years ago but they're now a bit too old for the role. Therefore, I won't mention their names...lol!

Hi apples, Honestly I simply can't think of a classic like that being remade. It was and still is one of the greatest movies ever made. But , regarding your question, I too agree that Catherine zeta Jones comes close to Vivian Leigh's portrayal of scarlt. I cannot think of any other actress doing justice to that role...

Keeley Hawes would be just right, as she has the attitude needed for a modern day Scarlet. Kate Winslet would also be good in the part. However, I agree with other posters that there was nothing wrong with the original, and any attempt at a remake would probably founder. Still, it was nice to think about it. Good topic.
