I greatly admire the non English speaking people who are writing in Mylot.
It must be very difficult for many of them yet they continue to do the best they can.
This way they can learn and improve. I hope all English speaking members will respect, encourage and help them. I speak German but find it impossible to write. My brain clogs up when I try. I would be interested to know if others experience the same think. Do you non English speaking people find English more difficult when you try to write it than when you speak it?. Do any English speaking people have problems writing in other languages that they can speak reasonably well.

Hi~~Colmuc,As a Chinese student who want to learn English well,I 'd like to thank you for your support for non English speakers,I really appreciate it.Although there are English lessons in primary and high school projects, few students are able to speak English well, let alone writing. During four years in my college,I find more and more youngsters do anything they can to study English, especially spoken English. There are so much differences between Chinese and English language systems, both culturally and socially,so people find English diffucult to learn, but things are different for Germen, deutschland and Britain/America share a lot of common backgrounds..
wish you a nice day

Hi Sherry, I am sure it must be very difficult for a Chinese person to learn English. I would find it impossible to learn Chinese. I have been twice in Shanghai and found that a lot of people spoke some English and were so keen to use it. I greatly admire you and our other non English speaking members for their amazing achievements with a foreign language.

There are many many dialects here,I chould not understand the Shanghai dialect either..even two adjoining villages have their own dialects..However the northern part of china is totally different..people from different provience share the same dialects, between which there are some subtle differences...

I couldn't agree more! Several of the non-English speaking users try really hard and get their message across even though they are not used to using English They have more courage than I have and I would never dare go and wrte in a forum where I was not fluent in the language. There are many who, even though English is not their first language, write better than those of us who use it every day
I moved from UK to Italy three decades ago and picked up the spoken Italian quite quickly but writing it was another matter. All those accents! It was at least fifteen years later that I dared to to express myself with written words. Now I pass the test but it was not easy and this is why I too admire those who really try and are doing such a good job here too!

I spotted this in 'no responses' and would probably not have seen it had it not have been there but looks like it hasn't made much difference as it is reaping its 'fruits' just the same

I think that it is a matter of practice. I am Filipino too, but English is our Second language and that is the main reason why Indians and Filipinos are around the globe to work because we have been using English (universal language) .
If you may ask, a lot of Filipinos and Indian members are here. We can speak English well and try our very best to write English as well. But with regards to grammar and such, well we still continue to polish that and striving our very best so that we can improve ourselves both oral and written.
Everyday i use to speak English because hubby is Indian and our common denominator is English language . For four months of being a member here on Mylot, i have learned a lot of good things as well as the negative ones with regards to earning money online.
So far, I have created my own blog that earns a penny everyday. Aside from that, I also participate on review sites that pays me good money by using English as a major tool for writing. So i still thanked my teachers who taught me English. Nobody is perfect but as long as i can express myself well and others understand what i am saying, that is important to me .

Well, I am from the country that speaks English as a second language. I would not say that we are a non English speaking people because we learn English in our school and it is a part of the curriculum. We know how to write and speak English but we are not speaking it in our home. We have our own language we use in our daily communitation. But even then, we are not as good as people who are born English speaking. Hehehe but I am thankful that most people I meet here in mylot are considerate. They are not belittling others who are not that good like they do.
I agree that there are many who use English as second language improved their communication because of participating here in mylot. GREAT!!

English is not my native language, but it's easy for me to write, speak, and listen to English, maybe because I'm an English teacher :) Last April I had TOEFL test to re-new my certificate, and my score is 619 out of 677 point scale.
But I still find it quite difficult to translate English documents into my native language, because sometimes it's hard to find similar or proper words.

Hello always_natalia, congratulations on your excellent test result. Your pupils are lucky to have such a good teacher. I suppose there are words in every language that do not have a direct equivalent in another so it can be difficult retaining the same meaning when you translate.

I'm spanish, but find natural writing in English, though I'm sure I make lots of mistakes; and the same happens when I write in German. I bet I'm terrible writing in Japanese or Russian, but's because I learned to speak and understand them but not to write them yet (more Japanese than Russian).
Anyway, it's great that people encourage us non-english speakers to improve our abilities with a language like English. Comparing with spanish, verbs in English are very easy because we have a form for each person in each time, that makes at least 30 verb forms for each verb...a hell to learn trust me!!! ;)
Hey all, I can help you improving spanish if you like :D

Hye Colmuc, the same way happened to me too. I am non speaking English and I am from Malaysia. In my country, English is second language after Malay language. Yes, it is too difficult for me to think and write. I keep thinking in Malay and then translate it to English, sometimes I think in English just when I am in hurry, but my word mastery in English are too little and I need to explore and keep on read something new in papers, news, books, internet and others. I do respect when my friends could speak in English fluently. But I believe, it is not hard if i keep on trying and learn English, so oneday I could be like them. So far, since school, I have no problems in English writing, just my poor and nervous in my speaking.

YEs I do think they are doing great to try to write in English as it is a very hard langauge to learn to speak as so many words sound the same.
I dont speak or write in any other language alto I do know very few words of Spanish.
I have such a hard time talking to my daughter in law for she really dont want to talk English at all and she has been in the staes for almost 9 years been sent to school to learn just didnt work.
I know she understands what I am saying adn I just talk to her the way I do my son. but sometimes really hard to figure out what she is tellig me.
sigh.
Ws really hard when I had to take her to the base to shop When son was in Iraq.
BUt we made do.

Hello Colmuc,
This is the first time I came across a good discussion about non English speaking members here. I am one of them. I learned English when I was 7 ( I am 37 now) and still, I find it hard to write English (or even speak sometimes...) One of the reasons I am here, is to learn English. I think this is the best site I can do that as I can learn from others. I have no choice but to write in English so that others can understand me here. Once, I came across a member who signed up and realized that this site is only in English and he responded to a discussion in his mother tongue language (which is same like mine) and wrote in his language something like this " Can someone speak to me in this language or is it in English only? Oh, God! How am I going to earn here?" As for me, I think speaking is easier than writing in English.

I speak Chinese, and the first time I came here, I found this is really a good place to improve English, you can read others' discussion, and respond their discussion, so I love this place, but I have to admit that writing here is hard for me, sometimes I found some interesting discussion, and I want to respond, but it's hard for me to respond, I know how to say that in Chinese, but too hard in English, and I'm still here, read others' discussion, and write my idea, I love this way.

Yes I find it hard to write English here in Mylot. I'm a Filipino although we use English in different areas but still we use our major language which is Tagalog. Sometimes I can't think of how can I express myself here. Sometimes I can't translate the sentence which I think in Tagalog to English. I don't know if my English is improving I hope so because I can practice here in mylot.

Hi agv, I don't know if you are improving but I assure you that your English is very good. It is possible that I will come to the Philippines later this year and I am happy to know that such a high standard of English exists although I think very few will be as good as you.

Hi lantian, thank you for your response. I could pick out some grammatical mistakes in what you have written but must tell you that everything is very clear and nobody will have any problem understanding you. Only one word is wrong. "Wanna" should be "want to". Well done. Keep working on it and ask for any help you need. I am sure a lot of people will be willing to assist you.

Thank you for admiring people non english speaking members here. And I'm proud to say I'm one of those people though, but it's not that hard for me to write in English but rather I have a difficult time speaking it actually, I speak three languages all in all. I am a Filipina by the way and I know Tagalog and Bisaya language which is a dialect here in the Philippines and lastly English. It's pretty hard to speak fluently in english, but I love to write :D It's fortunate for me that I can write the other two languages correctly. Thanks again. Happy mylotting! :D

I'm from Indonesia, one of South East Asian country. Of course everyday I'm not speaking English, but i think it doesn't matter what your "mother tongue" language are. Is it Germany, French, Italy, even Japanese, as long as they could understand international language (English) and could give respond that other people understand. It is nice to learn & communicate with global community, it can also improve my English skill

Hi flaredust, I know Indonesia and like it a lot. I have visited Bali 4 times and have also been in Jakarta and Sulawesi. Last year I was in West Papua. Wonderful!
It is because English is spoken worldwide that most English speaking people have become so lazy and don't try to learn another language. I hope you continue to contribute here and find it helpful. Thanks for your response.

Hi, Colmuc!
I was brought up and live with Filipino (Tagalog) speaking people. But in school, English is taught and is a requirement. I cannot speak English fluently. I can write English better than speaking because in writing you can always edit it. You can always check up the grammar, punctuations and spelling while typing it. And you can check dictionary and many other aids.
Yes, mylot has been generous enough to let Non-english speakers contribute this community. We have been greatly welcomed. I love the English language and is learning everyday. I always have my thesaurus and dictionary with me. ^^v

Opposite of you. I find it easier for me to write in English than speaking it. I can speak English, but not fluent. I created a lot of opportunity for myself in writing like writing blog and posting response in MyLot. But it is not easy to get chances to speak English!

My primary language isn't english. I'm from the philippines and our native language is Tagalog. It's really hard sometimes to express ourselves in a different language. Though learning english is a must for like us to communicate with other people.. it's fun and just for people to understand what we meant is really something for us. For me, I'd rather write in english than do it orally, I don't have an erase to erase my wrong grammars when i speak. ROFL!
happy mylotting colmuc :)

Yes! I couldn't more strongly agree with you. I greatly admire the writers here that still write although they do not speak our language or write it very well. It Is a great way to learn and if they are her in the United States they most definatly need to learn our language. And what a better way to do it than mylot! I do not speak a different language, but if I did i would want to do whatver I could to learn it better everyday.

I prefer to write than to speak in English. My pronunciation is miserable and I speak veeeery slowly. I also get very nervous. But when I write I´m more fluent. It might help that I´m typing alone whilst when speaking you have another person in front of you.
As for clogging, my brain clogs even in Spanish, my native language. I am a writer and I often want to say something, know there is a word that is exactly what I want but the %&%& word just flew from my brain Luckily, most of the time the runaway word comes back home and I can grasp it and place it where I need it.
Happy mylotting and thanks for the congratulations. You deserve it too
