Travelling around the world you will often come across something that is new to you. In Darwin, Australia I found a gent's toilet that had a feature I had never seen before and have never seen again. Is it unique, I wonder? In one of the best restaurants in Darwin Harbour I went into the toilet and found my self in a room with one side all glass. I could see out into the restaurant and was somewhat puzzled. My shock was even greater when I realised that this was the gents urinal. No stalls or individual sections, just a glass wall with a drain running along the floor at the bottom. I could stand there having a pee looking into the restaurant with several occupied tables within easy striking distance. Absolutely amazing. It was of course one way glass and from the restaurant side it was a large mirrored wall. I cannot imagine what the lady customers would have thought if they had known what was happening just a few feet away! Has anybody seen or heard anything about anything like this? I am not sure but I think the attached picture could have been taken outside the restaurant. Do we have any members in Darwin who know it?

Wow! That's amazing. And a bit odd as well. Maybe it was the owner's choice that their customers shouldn't get bored while they are peeing. I mean, who doesn't like an entertainment? And who wouldn't like a change?

Hi ebook_freak, yes something very different. I would love to know who had the idea for such a thing.

No, the snake is not mine. I just borrowed to have my picture taken. It was in the Mekong Delta in Vietnam.

He must be some great guy who was bored after urination with nothing else to look at. So he thought about seeing the guest from a 'single-perspective' view- and found that it was interesting... so he must have decided to use it.. Wonderful, eh? P.S.: The snake looks good, do you own it?

Wow--that sounds very unique to me. The designer for this restaurant must have some sense of humor! I have seen photos of a public restroom in Europe. The walls are made of one-way glass, but inside there is a standard toilet. I don't think I could ever use a restroom where I could see people walking by me, or waiting for the bathroom!

hi inkstainedheart, thanks for your response. Strange that all ladies think like you but for men it is no problem. I wonder if there is one man who would find it difficult or one lady who could use such a toilet. Have never seen pictures of the European toilet you mention. Do you know where it is?.

Hi inkstainedheart, many thanks for the link. That is really interesting. I wonder how many women use it. It must feel really strange with glass on all sides. Maybe the Australian designer got his idea from this one.

Actually, I just found pictures of a similar toilet in Texas! I'm rather surprised we have one in the US, but I guess there's bathroom humor everywhere. Here's the link: http://margaret.healthblogs.org/2009/03/12/bathroom-floors/

Woah There. Even if I was a man I would relly have to run out and look at that wall to make sure no one was seeing in! Now makes ya wonder what was in the ladies room huh?

Hi Lakota, I must admit I was a little hesitant but only because I would not want to offend anyone. Ladies feel different about this from men and I cannot imagine any place trying this kind of thing in the female toilets. I wish I had taken a picture. Would have been funny to watch for a man going in and then stand outside in front of the mirror and take a picture when you thought he was in mid stream! Sorry, my wicked mind is misbehaving again. Hope you are not shocked.

That sounds like a very unusual toilet. I am a lady and I have been to normal toilets in Australia. In the USA I found a toilet with no individual sections and thought that was strange. I waited until I found a normal toilet. In Indonesia there was a tire at a petrel station and so I went into the trees. Some of the toilets there and in Malaysia were a hole in the ground. When visited Darwin in the wet season it was hot and humid. The rain came down with such amazing force. I remember thunder and lightening displays. The insect life was everywhere and I got quite a few bites. I went on to Kakadu National Park. Luckily the toilets were fine.

Hi maximax, Thanks for responding. Yes, I have come across some rather basic toilets in my travels too. Too bad you hit Darwin at the wrong time. I was really lucky with the weather and also had a fantastic tour of the Kakadu National Park. Did you see my discussion on the Vietnam toilet where you had to change your shoes?

It sounds interesting. I have read about those types of toilets. I remember once I got a formward mail regarding a toilet which has glass on four sides, but the glasses are one way. I am a woman. I will be embarassed to use one of those rest rooms. If I get into such a rest room I think I won't feel like peeing. I won't feel like peeing even for the next one hour. Lol. Thanks for sharing the interesting experience.

Hi daliaj, being a lady it is normal that you would feel that way. For me it was no problem. Just an interesting experience.
