Yes, Vitamin C prevents common cold. My father is a doctor and he advised me to take up to 1000mg of Vitamin C/Ascorbic Acid everyday. He said it prevents common cold and increases immunity.

At the very first sign of cold symptoms, many people reach right for a bottle of vitamin C supplements. Vitamin C for the common cold is such a widely accepted treatment that we seek it out in lots of products like fortified juices, tablets, lemon and orange.
And as for your question, there are other fruits rich in vitamin c. In fact, the most richest source is gooseberry, known in india as Amla.
Common cold is usually caused due to Rhinovirus and this attack can be counter attacked by the body according to the available vitamin-c present.
I hope this helped you.
