Maggie is dying on my bedroom floor and there's nothing I can do

Those of you who've read my previous discussions know that Maggie the dog is very old and sick and that we've had some close calls with her recently. She'd been fine for a while, but yesterday it started again, and she tried to go bury herself in some bushes to die, but I carried her inside again. Then she seemed a bit better, but today has been the worst I've ever seen. She has blood coming from her mouth and has lost control of her bowels and bladder right where she lay. She was breathing really hard but now it is very shallow. I'd bring her to the vet to help her go easier to the other side, but there is nobody here to take care of the kids. She's dying, right there on my floor right now. All I can do is clean up around her and tell her I love her. She's the sweetest dog you could ever meet and I am going to miss her more than I can even describe. If you pray, please pray that she goes easy and that God gives me the strength to not fall apart in front of the kids. I hate this. My poor dog!

Terribly sorry. It's hell when you lose a loved one & even worse when you have to helplessly watch it happen.

Thank you, so am I. My little dog was like Maggie's own pup, and he's devastated. He keeps going to her blanket covered body in the garage and barking, I guess hoping she'll wake up, and when I brought the other big dog to say goodbye to Maggie, the little dog, Randy nearly killed him - he doesn't want anyone but me near her body. Even the cats are upset, most of them Maggie mothered over when they were babies, cleaning them and carrying them in her mouth as if they were her own. THis is a huge loss to my entire family. She really was something extraordinarily special.

I'm so sorry to hear this Marianne. Pets invariably become an integral part of the family, and specially dogs, oh! they are indeed our best friends. I cant think of ways enough to say how sensitive dogs are to our every need and how intelligently responsive. But this is the part I hate most about having pets...seeing them die is no less than losing a family member. I remember we had a dog quite sometime back, in fact when I was a child. In later stage it developed tumour in the stomach and we even had the vet brought in and operated her in the house itself to make her more comfortable with us all around but she never made it. As with you, my heart broke. After that, we never had any pets. How are the kids responding? Poor darlings, they are the worst affected.

My son is sleeping but my four year old daughter knows what's happening and she keeps bringing me tissues to dry my eyes. She's a sweet little girl. She goes and pets Maggie every few minutes.

I am so sorry MSV! I have lost pets before and it hurts! They become a part of your family! Try and take comfort knowing that she lived a good long life. She had a good life with a good owner who loved her very much! She is no longer suffering. I pray that God gives you comfort during this difficult time. God bless you and your family! And thanks for loving animals! ~Spring

I'm so sorry! I start to tear up every time I so much as think of one of my dogs dying. I hope she passes as painlessly as possible, and I know she knows how much you love her. Dogs just know these things. Just comfort her until the end. That is the best you can do for her. My thoughts are with you, AngryKitty.

I'm soo sorry, and just know that Maggie knows you love her and she'll go easily. I went through this 9 years ago, with my golden retriever. The hardest thing, but I held her head in my lap and I stroked her gently, and told her how much I loved her. She took her final breath as easily as if she were just sleeping. It's hard to let an old friend go, but I'm sure she has had a full life, and she has her dignity, You gave her that. Hugs to you, and prayers for both you and Maggie.

She managed to get up on her feet and wag her tail for me, which gave me a chance to clean up the mess she'd been laying in, she drank some water and lay back down in her now clean spot. I don't see anymore blood coming from her mouth, but I know she is soooo tired. I'm glad I was at least able to give her back some dignity by cleaning for her.

Aww Kitty, I'm sorry. My thoughts and prayers will be with you and Maggie today. It sounds like she probably wouldn't make it through the trip in the car to the vet anyway. Just leave her and keep confronting her. She may not be conscious and probably doesn't feel any pain anyway. It's ok to cry in front of the kids, you can all cry together.

She's still conscious, she's watching me. This is a dog who hates to make in the house and always felt really bad in the event of an accident, and the poor thing soiled herself and can't even get up off the floor to get out of it. I tried to clean up as best as I could around her, but she's a 60 pound dog and I have a hard time moving her. Plus, moving her might make her even more uncomfortable. Thanks for the prayers, I'm gonna need them.

Thank yo so much for your kind words and prayers. The worst thing about having animal friends is that they steal your heart but have such relatively short lifespans compared to us that we almost always have to face saying goodbye to them.

Oh my goodness, this brought tears to my eyes. I'm so sorry that your sweet Maggie has passed away. Your little daughter bless her heart that's when I started crying when I read about her bringing you the tissues. Children can be so amazing when we least expect it. UGH my heart is breaking right along with yours as I remember when our dear old friend passed away too. My sincere thoughts and prayers for you and your family. She knew your loved her that's why she got up and wagged her tail for you,.. now she can be at peace with your daddy and her kitty friend.

I am sure that she is gone by the time I read your discussion. I know how hard it is to let go but you must know that she is no longer in any pain. If you can pull out some pictures of her during happier times and set them where you can see them, this will help you erase the bad sight of her passing. Blessing to you all

{{Oh Sweetheart}}, I am so so sorry to hear of this, as you know by now I've been involved with ( puter problems) the last couple of days and I just hadn't seen this posting; My heart goes out to you and your family over your loss of dear sweet Maggie; you have been right there with Maggie and she wouldn't have wanted it any other way; You're a kind loving person to dear Maggie and trust me she knows this; I've been in your situation many times, so don't fret over it; Not being able to get her to the Vet to pass over; I never did like having my beloved pets draw their last breath in those cold, unfeeling places; To me its always better if they can be in the environment they love {home with their loved ones, other pets, their human family, their own beds} etc... so speaking personally I'd much rather my pets be at home with me, when its time for them to go; I think losing our beloved pets is so very very hard on us, we love them with all of our hearts, they love us with all of their hearts and would do anything for us; I've just been a basket case reading through all the posts here not only about your beloved Maggie, but about the others sharing the loss of their pets too; All of it just makes me cry, I always think of all my many many many lost friends but the only way I can get through the pain of losing them is to know I will see them again when its my time to go; I know you know this too! I wish I could be there to give you a big old hug during this time; I'll be thinking about you;!!! Love & hugs to you, your pets at home grieving, & your whole family!!!

Kitty, I just now saw this post. I haven't been online much with myLot due to busy work, but I wanted to offer my condolences. It's never easy to say goodbye to a furkid. I lost one of my kitties a few years back and it broke my heart. I was still pregnant and I thought I was going to miscarry due to the stress of losing my kitty. Maggie will be waiting on you when you get there and together, you'll enter Heaven, never to be torn apart again.

I am so so sorry... We don't know one another but I know how it feels to lose a pet that is more then a pet but a member of the family. We lost our sweet Hooch when she was fourteen years old. She was going blind, had three legs and was the most unique and wonderful animal I have ever met. You and your sweetie are both in my prayers...
