Mission to Mars- paramount or pointless?

NASA have anounced that they will be begining a journey to Mars. It is to commence in the year 2012 but due to huge fincial costs, resource provisions, and futher preparation the actual Launch will only commence in the year 2028. This may be seen as a waste of money or the greates step in space exploration. However the costs could end many global world debts and troubles. Columbus landed on America, Armstrong landed on the moon- now its time for the next landing on Mars. I believe that it is paramount for these expeditions as they have defined the human race as a technologically evolved race.
