How can we prepare for recession?

Apart from learning to live on less than our income or compromising on our lifestyle, what can be the possible other ways to help ourselves prepare for recessive scenarios??

I think it is in the good times we should be thinking of the bad times, so really we all should have been putting something away as they used to say for a rainy day, other than that I guess all we really can do is buy cheaper, and go without a bit ...
