How long does it take you to research and write an article?

United States

Tonight I was working on an article that took me a couple of hours to write (and that did not include the time...at least 2 more hours...it took to research my subject). How long does it take you to research and write your articles? Sometimes it seems like a torture, it goes so slowly. Needless to say, I don't publish as much as I want because it takes me so long just to write one article, usually all I can manage in a day. What is your average time? How many articles can you write in one day?

For me, this varies a lot depending on how much I already know on the topic and how many words the article is to be. Most of mine are between 450 and 1200 words, so research and writing can be any where from 20 minutes to an hour or more. I like to keep my articles well written, of course, so I can between one and five a day. It truly depends on the things mentioned above. As long as you write only one article a day and it is a great one, don't worry that you don't write more. : ) Karen

That's a very nice sentiment, Karen. I should be happy with my one article instead of complaining all the time. I give you props for being able to write 5 in one day. I guess I should try one day to see how many I could actually write in one day. Who knows? I might surprise myself. What sites do you like to write for? Good luck with your writing!

Haven't heard about Ezines (as a site as such) is that a speicifc site or just a writing category you were listing?

Aside from articles for my website and blogs, I love to write for Helium, Ezines, Triond, and Associated Content. They are all very reputable sites. : ) Karen

If it's for writing sites, I would take a bit more longer than writing for blog posts. But then again, I used to devote a bit more time in my blogs and I uploaded songs and videos which could take some time. However back to writing, I think it is actually and conceptually depending on the topic. If there are many ideas, then typing out isn't a problem definitely.

What type of blog do you have? I have one just to have a central point to keep all my book reviews, so I don't write anything really original for it. I'd like to start another political blog...but who has time? Good luck with your writing!

Nowadays, I keep my blog very at leisure of uploading songs and videos. I used to have a lot of posts talking about social issues basically and I jumble up with movies info. But now, I am more relaxed and tweet rather than blog and I keep those videos and music coming at my blog. I keep it very minimal and basic. It's in my profile by the way. You are right, no one really have the luxury to blog so much nowadays. It's not really the trend already. But then it's more to time constraint rather than other things.

It usually takes me several hours to research an article of about 1000 words. It'll usually take me another hour or two to write and revise the article. I can usually only manage one article a day as well. I tend to focus on one thing at a time, so when I finish the article, I find it hard to move onto another article or writing project. Wish I could be more prolific.

We sound like we do our articles at the same pace. I know what you are saying about not being able to move on to a new article until the first is finished. I am the same way. I'm like that about reading books, too. I can't read multiple books at the same time. Not sure what that says about me? Good luck with your writing!

The funny thing is, I can read several books at once. Wonder what that is different for me? I wish you well on your writing, too!

Hi , It really depends. I generally keep my note book and pen ready with me when I am reading a book. I keep making notes or jotting down points. So It really depends on how long it takes for me to perfect the draft and then write the final article. Sometimes I am able to write on the spur of the moment in an hours time and submit the article. But f the subject needs more reserach and is new to me then I take much longer. I feel that it is better to submit an article only after I am completely satisfied with it...

You are so right about being satisfied before publishing something. Once you put the article out there into Cyberspace, it's there forever, although with Helium you can leapfrog it to improve your writing. For most sites, it's a one-shot only deal. It's better to make sure you have quality writing that will stand the test of time than to just hurry it along for the cash...or that's what I think anyway. Good luck with your writing!

For me, when I'm writing its mostly for my college newspaper so therefore there is some research involved but it is mostly interviewing. There are some stories that I can spend a few hours researching and then have a draft done in 30 minutes and then a final done within another hour or so. Though there have been longer feature stories I've done where I've spent 5-6 hours doing interviews and then another 5-6 hours transcribing all the interviews before I could even start writing and then add a few more hours onto that trying to piece together the main facts and quotes and making sure everything is AP style and attributed. I feel that people that do more writing online don't really follow AP guidelines so therefore they don't realize how much more effort needs to really go into the writing process.

I was trained in Chicago style, which is not the same as AP. It uses the "Chicago Manual of Style" and has different rules for things like commas. In AP, you have a list like: "one, two and three" whereas with Chicago, the rule is "one, two, and three"...still it is following the same set of rules to make your writing more consistent. I think you will learn once you are out of school just how many very poor writers there are and how few people actually know about or use a style manual. Good luck with your writing!

AP = Associated Press. Basically its kind of like MLA style for journalist. Its just a huge book that tells you what to capitalized, how to do quotes, when to use commas, how to spell certain words, when to abbreviate, etc. because they like some continuity between papers. It is a lot of work at first constantly going through a paper almost word by word, but after years of doing it a lot of it I know automatically so for me its normally just going back to make sure I do things like state and title abbreviations right.

I do article writing to earn extra income since I'm a stay-at-home mom. The time really depends on the topic and word count required. There are some topics that I am very familiar with and some subjects require only personal views and opinions so that would be very easy to do. As for topics that need research, 20-30 minutes of reading is enough for me to get an idea. So normally, I can do an article in about 30 minutes to 3 hours maximum. I regularly get an order of 5 articles daily but sometimes, I accept more projects if I get to finish my regular assignment early.

I write articles for my website and blogs. Sometimes, I get an idea and the words just seem to flow and very little research is needed. I used to write articles for Ciao on various consumer products, but I found the research difficult and I came to realize that consumer products were not the best thing for me to be writing about. Although I love my gadgets etc. I am more into philosophical and spiritual subjects and feel more "alive" when writing in this way. When I was writing for Ciao, I often submitted two articles at a time - but I never felt they would good enough, probably because that was not my niche. - Derek

I think you are right. It's best to stick with what you enjoy writing about! Otherwise the process becomes a lot more work and a lot less fun. There are plenty of folks who enjoy doing product reviews...leave it to them. Concentrate on what excites you and where you can really shine as a writer! Good luck with your writing!

That sounds about my average as well--that is writing only one article a day--though have been out of commission for awhile as I'm getting over a severe bout of carpal tunnel and strained wrist. It also takes me as long to research for an article as it does for you. I sure wish I could write more articles a day, but since I'm not a great on-line reader reading too much would be a real strain on my eyes---I'm just plain too use to reading the old fashioned way..a book...LOL I admire one fellow mylotter here, who really sees writing articles as a "job" in the strictest sense and writes about three four articles a day--she starts right after breakfast and continues until dinner time..have to give her a lot of credit, no?

It's nice to know I am not alone. I don't think I have the discipline to write 8 hours a day, and for the amount of money I make, it wouldn't be worth the stress of doing that. One tip that someone mentioned was to do several articles on similar or related topics. That's some advice that might help me. Hope you are doing better with your wrist!

I really never write articles but Yesterday I signed up with a site and will start writing. How long it will take, I have no idea. But I guess it take a while since you have to reread and make shore the gramma is ok and the topic is intersting enough to be read. I am going to write an article about ADHD to day and send it on that site. I think it is enough to write one article a day. You have to bring god stuff and I need my time to do other stuff online to..so one article a day will be enough for me...lol

You should start out slow anyway...beginning with one good article a day is a good goal, and once you've got some articles under your belt, you can write more (or not, as is the case with me! LOL). The important thing is to produce your best work and enjoy the process of writing. Good luck!

It all depends on what the topics are for the articles that I write. If they are something that I already know about, then I get put together a 300 - 500 word article within between 30 minutes and one hour. If the topic is something that I haven't previously researched though, it normally takes about two hours - an hour or so of research, and then 45 minutes to an hour to write the article. In terms of average, I can usually complete two - three articles in a day. If they are shorter though (between 100 and 200 words), then I can get between 10 and 15 articles completed.

It depends on the subhect or topic and the length of the article. There are topics which I can write on withut the need to make any research. On the other hand there are topics which I have to do some research before actually writing the ideas or points down. On average for a 15 page assignment I need around one week. For topics which I am well versed in the average is 3 pages per hour. all the best, rosdimy

You seem like you write at a pretty good rate. I guess the hardest part for me is starting after I have done the research. Only guilt motivates me to get something down. Then once I have started working, things get easier. Good look with your writing!

it really depends on the kind of topic i am researching, there are those that require a lot of patience and a wide variety of approach, lots and lots of references. when i made an article about Animal Farm, it took me about 4 or 5 days before i finally completed it. Animal Farm is not just a story about animals in fact it represents history in the likes of Lennin.

"Animal Farm" was and continues to remain a classic novel. The best thing about a book like that is that the more you study it, the more layers you can peel off and examine, and the richer, more rewarding the experience is. Good luck with your writing!

I don't write but I usually do some research for some people for their articles. Usually, it took me half a day to give them all the necessary information. That's the shortest time I can give but usually if the topic is really hard to research, I also manage to give all the information in 1 day. It's really slow especially if the topic is so limited.

It can take me anywhere from a half an hour to 2 hours to write an article of about 1000 words. I think it depends on how much I already know about the subject. I can crank out articles when people are telling me what they want them on specifically, and other times I might need to read about the topic for a while. It's like, I love to learn, so I don't consider that part the work, but if I did, it sometimes would be a lot more time than 2 hours :P
• United States
22 May 09
You have the right approach. Learning is always valuable, and it's best not to focus on how much time it takes (like me, the complainer). I actually like the research part more than the writing part. In writing for Internet sites, I've actually come to appreciate a lot of new things that I had glossed over in my youth. So it has a double benefit! Good luck with your writing!

Personally for me, the type of things that I like to Write about usually take no time to do any research of. These are things maybe that I feel of are importance to want to write about and share, or from personal experience, or just some words of wisdom and hope. I am always taking notes and doing a lot of reading on sites so this helps give me a lot of ideas for sure. For me, it would be Boring to have to write about things outside of my comfort zone where I would have to do some research. I tend to leave these type of things for everyone else.

Everyone has their own writing style...and that's what makes it great. How boring would it be if everyone did the same thing. I have written articles based on experience, but I like the learning part of researching, so I tend to go in that direction. I guess I will be the perpetual student in one form or another! Continued good luck with your writing! Where do you write?

I've been told I spend way too much time researching but feel for articles I have no knowledge on I need to know it before I can write it. Because of that I often spend 2-3 hours researching for a 1 hour or less write. Of course topics that I do have experience or knowledge on take much less or no research.

I am with you. I always do too much research for the article I am writing, and frequently have information I never even incorporate into my article. I always worry about coming up short...I don't know why. Maybe I should try and come up with a new way to use all that extra material that goes to waste? Continued good luck with your writing!

I've started training myself to try to keep in mind alternative articles that I can write from a different angle but using at least part of the 'extra' research I already did. I've actually written and published some articles that I wrote from research I did a few years ago for some e-books I ghost wrote.

I would average one a day depending on how much research is required. I can complete an opinion piece in half an hour or so but a piece which requires detailed information will take me at least a day. I wish I could work at a quicker pace but the problem I have is that it takes ages for me to be satisfied with my work; I will edit and re-edit and re-edit again until...Whoila! Perfection! Well...Almost!

It depends on how much I already know about the subject. I recently did one on Big Band/Swing for helium and I couldn't remember all the details and dates so I did some research and the article started taking a different direction and then I would look for other information so that one took a few days to complete in between doing other things. I did a myLot task with research in about an hour so it just depends.
