I went to Ho Chi Minh City for the summer and I while eating in a restaurant, we found that rice was served after all the viands have come out. We were eating a set menu for tourists and coming from the Philippines, where rice is always served first so you can eat it with the viand, I don't understand why rice is served right before dessert in Vietnam. Are there any Vietnamese here who can help me understand? Is this a custom of some sort?

I spent 6 months in Hanoi, Vietnam and the rice was always served at the beginning of the meal. I realize there are differences between the north and south, but I think what you ran across was the exception. I think traditionally the Vietnamese eat rice with the meal and not after. Now I'm thinking about having a nice bowl of Pho!

I'm viet and personally I think the restaurant you went to did something wrong because according to custom even here in the US you're suppose to bring the rice first so that you can eat it with the main courses or the appetizer.
