I am a parent and am talking from my own experiences.
It is important to give children some freedom with boundaries. I allow one my children go out on a friday after school but they need to be home before the sun goes down. The other because they are younger needs to be home by a certain time. If they break this rule, I do ground them and they are not allowed to go out or have friends over.
Children do need to have rules they need to obey. As they get older the rules then become law. If they learn to obey the rules of the parents, hopefully they will obey the law as they grow up.
If children have full freedom and can do what they want, they may not respect the law as they grow up.
So I believe the children of today need to have a balance of freedom with rules.

They must go together, balance, freedom if they do. Strict if it is possible.
Someone I know that their children free in anytime or whatever they like and the result was negative mainly;compared to the child not spoiled, positive result. Very good, impress, toward their manhood.
