What do you do when your computer misbehaves?

Having just spent 4.5 hours working through the editors scores on my novel (which needs to be pack by the weekend to meet publication date - I'm on holiday from tomorrow) I am less than happy that the computer has gone and dumped it gods know where or failed to save my changes. A the moment like a naughty pet it is in serious danger of being put outside probably via the flamming window!
