Have you noticed that the majority of the time when your driving and a cop happens to drive by everyone including yourselves slows down ( even if your not speeding)? Are you guilty?

Yeah, this is what I observe most of the time too, whether I'm driving or not. I guess the fear of police and being issued with a summon compels us to slow down, even if we're not driving over the speed limit. I think if you slow down, it also gives you a higher probability of arguing your way out of trouble if you really did speed after all; if you are caught red-handed speeding down the lane with the police around, you have no way of denying it but if you slow down, at least you still have one extra excuse! But still, I'm not sure if slowing down really works because I remember once when my father was speeding along the highway and as he spotted some traffic policemen ahead, he slowed down but he still got stopped by the policemen and after about 15 minutes of heated discussion, he still got issued with a summon......

I will check my speed if I see a cop and if I'm speeding, which I usually am unless I'm in town, I will slow down. But, to answer your first question, yes, I've seen this many times and it irritates me when it causes traffic to get all bunched up for no reason.

i do slow down just so to make sure my speed isnt over the limit. from there, i will adjust according to how fast i was travelling before i see the cops. its just a matter of making sure. it will be plain dumb if you see the cops and continue to speed or speed up and get caught while starring right at the illegality of the action itself.

I think its just a precation if you know wjhat you mean. If youre watching a cop car then you take your eyes of the speed gauge and you dont know what speed youre doing. Even if you are not speeding whats the problem with slowing down 5-10 mph just to make sure you dont get a heafty fine, but io agree people can go to far and practically stop.

I don't believe that this is because of any guilt but a precautionary measure to not get into any trouble with the law. As most cops are looking for anything and everything to fine drivers it is a good idea to be cautious and not give them anything to find guilty of. But I have noticed that a handful of drivers on a major city road in my town would drive reasonably slower when around a cop. What I tend to do is move to the lane next to me if they are behind me and let them pass if they want. But just for a fyi, driving slowly and causing traffic to go slower can get a person into trouble as well.

Guilty as charged. I do keep a pretty good watch while I'm speeding though. LOL.

Faith sheepishly raises her hand :) Yep have noticed this and as I never speed since being involved in a serious accident some years ago, I slow down even when going below the limit already. Drives the kids crazy :) I love that part of it :)

Just a little FYI - was on my way to work about 7:30 this morning and who comes up along side of me but a city police officer. Quick look at the speedometer, doing 25, the speed limit for the area, then yep you got it, tapped the break and he went wipping past me :( WHY??? I felt like and idiot for doing it then laughed the rest of the way to work thinking about this discussion :)

I only slow down if I am driving too fast. Sometimes I drive behind the cop car at the same speed as he does, unless he is driving realy fast or have blue lights flashing. Good observation from you

The answer is yes. I know I shouldn't but the truth is the truth I do speed. So even if I am not speeding I do automatically slow down.

I think most people are guilty of that. I admit that I'm guilty of it too. As someone else said, I don't know if it happens necessarily out of guilt but more or less an automatic reflex or something.

I do slow down if I notice one, my speed usually over the limit. But I guess it's more to guilty conscience (even if I did nothing wrong ...I think I didn't...) Anyway, it's natural to do that. Cops love to stop my car and ask for my driving license. I think it's due to the Practise logo sticker on my window. In my country, it's important to stick that when you still a driver in training before license being confirm. That will take two years. However, the sticker isn't for me, it's for my sister. I already have a valid license. Still, because of the sticker, cops will stop the car to check whether I have a license and follow the rules. I have to stick the sticker until next year where she will receive her valid license.

I don't think it has to do with being guilty. Just the fact that you don't want a ticket, you don't want your insurance to go up. Basically you don't want any trouble. So don't pass up the cop. :)
