I happen to think that competition is beneficial. Growing up my brother and I were very competitive. This made us both strive to get the best grades and try to outdo each other in etracurricular activities as well. This was especially helpful when we were at a point where we outperformed many of our peers in school. My mother always encouraged us to do our personal best, but it was the competition we had with each other that made us excel. I also encourage my children to do their personal best, and I discourage competition between them because they take it to a very unhealthy level. We work on building their self-esteem while also encouraging them to excel in everything they do. It is a difficult balance. Still, competition can urge someone to achieve things in a way that no amount of positive reinforcement and encouragement can. Taking out competition is just a way to say that mediocrity is acceptable.

Hi,thanks for your kind response. Yes, I think competition is the driving force of each individual. But using the vicious methods and negative campaigning can only lead to a harmful trend. So it is crucial for competitors to keep in mind that ultimate outcome of competition is self-improvement.
