Do you give your best food or old food to food banks?

My Mother in Law is 85 years young. She makes it on $1000. per month. She cleans a house for extra cash at 85! There are some Church's near her that pass out food, and the local food bank. When I go over to her house I find most is out of date. Or something she would not even know how to fix.
There are people who really rely on the food that is donated...so do you give your best? Or do you get rid of the rest?
