Have you rated anybody negative? Did you felt guilty for it?

There was a a time when I rated somebody a negative and a part of me felt guilty for doing so. I gave that post a negative because the grammar was awfully constructed, the post is too short to be understood and I can't seem to understand what it is really trying to convey. Suddenly, I felt guilty because that kind soul may have done his best to respond in my discussion and what I paid him back is a negative. While, some part of me says that it is my prerogative to do so, I'm still guilty for doing it but decided to just charge it to experience: to be careful in giving ratings and consider everything before doing so. Have you ever done this and felt like it?

I have given negative ratings and I dont feel guilty about it. There are people who are out there just spamming. There are people who dont actually read the whole discussion before responding. There are people who post something way off topic. There are people who are offensive and rude. However, I have never rated someone negatively because I couldnt understand what they were trying to say. MyLot is open for everyone. It has to be in English, which can be very difficult if it isnt your first language. If you cant understand something, it is best to just move on and not respond or rate. The best thing you did was learn from what you did. Now you know that you shouldnt do it again. Everyone makes mistakes. Learning from them is really important!

I will never understand why people say that everything should be rated positively! If everyone did that, what would be the point of the rating system? The same goes with not rating anything negative. If you wont rate it negative even though it deserves to be, what is the point?

Absolutely! You report a spammer and then give him a pat on the back by plussing him? Absolutley absurd! There needs to be common sense and logical thinking in many aspects of myLotting in order to get it right

I have just rated you positivley and I feel good about it... I almost never give a negative rate but when I do I amke sure that I am doing so with a clear conciense. I have read some very offensive resposes, some being rude, foul language and even blasphemy. I rated negative becuse I believe we have a good site here where we give opinions in a muture manner, not childish and offensive. May you recieve many pos ratings...

I myself have never rated anyone a Negative. Everyone has questions and opinions. Some peoples grammer isnt its best but give them credit for trying atleast. I know my grammer is not the best but i dont try to be perfect on everything. If you can understand what im saying then thats all that matters really. HOWEVER if i did give someone a negative then there has to be a reason for it and a very good one at that not just because of grammer or spelling errors or something of that nature has to be a really good reason behind it.

Yes I have because it was a very disgusting comment there. And offensive. And I never felt guilty for doing that.It would be too simply for him to escape with this comment.I want Mylot to be clean and perfect place. It's made for sharing opinion and not posting cheap and disgusting things.

I completely agree with you silvercoin. I actually enjoy mylot, but when I come across something that is just basically in VERY bad taste, or I guess you could say offensive it becomes less appealing to look at, if you understand me.

I have rated someone negative but I don't feel guilty about it because my reason is a reasonable one. That myLotter I rated negative is very rude.. He or she should have just responded in a not-too-harsh way instead of being harsh. Everybody is welcome here on myLot, right? We're all equal people here with different insights and points of views and we should respect each others beliefs but that particular person did not respect the discussion starter's opinions so, there I rated him negative. Happy myLotting

If it was too short and contained horrible grammar, then you are justified in rating it negative. It's only a rating, it's not a life basing experience. I have given negatives for answers that have nothing to do with the question, and also for horrible grammar and punctuation. If I don't feel it rates a positive rating but not horrible, I leave it alone. You aren't rating the person, only that particular post.

I wouldnt rate the comments negative for bad grammar and punctuation. MyLot requires all discussions and responses to be in English. In the discussion guidelines they also say this under 'Dont' Post discussions, responses or comments criticizing members for bad/broken English or bad spelling. Everyone is welcome at myLot, we have users from all around the world and they are welcome regardless of their proficiency with the English Language. To me that also means not leaving negative ratings for their bad English. They will improve over time. It is hard to do something like this in a foreign language at first! I admire them for trying.

Sometimes it's obvious that English is not their native language, but those that live in English speaking countries should have a basic grasp of the language to be understood. The rating I am referring to was in Ohio I think and my 5 year old son would do better. It was a lot of street slang and text abbrevations as well as using numbers for letters. Not fully knowing the language is different than just refusing to try.

I've rated a few negative. I never felt bad for doing it though because i knew it was needed. i only rate negative if they get really rude or out of line with the people involved in the discussion. either that or if they respond to the discussion just to get paid and their response has nothing to do with the discussion. Like if someone asks advice about dogs and they respond just to say "I don't have a dog". That isn't helping anyone.

I did not feel guilty about it. I rated him negative because he was very opinionated so much that he doesn't know how to respect others' opinions. :) But he used to be my avid responder and I bet he didn't know about it

Honestly? I rate negative only when I see that the person is being belligerent and belittling someone else, or just plain old being a jerk. Do I feel guilty? Not only no, but HECK no! Those types of people deserve it! I think you felt guilty because how do you know if that person doesn't speak English as their first language? I would have felt guilty for rating them negatively, too. It just means you have a conscience after all - too bad the conscience didn't kick in until after the fact, though...lol Why don't you find their posts and rate the rest of them positively to make up for it? Then you will no longer have a reason to feel guilty.

I rate the people who reply to my question with a positive, that is the least I can do to thank someone. I do not rate negatively. I think that negative option should be eliminated as it is used as a punishment if someone does not agree. I have however used the report button "!" to report spam and profanity. Nobody needs to be over run with spam as the site would soon decline and cease to function. Profanity does not belong on a website, I can forgive the odd hell and damn for effect but not a whole paragraph. I am fairly liberal but I do not like personal attacks, even made worse with profanity.

You shouldn't be too hard on yourself, that is an easy mistake to make. I could have done the same thing myself but fortunately I had seen where that is not the right thing to do because we have so many different countries here. The main thing is that you did not do it intentionally to hurt the person. It was a misunderstanding. I would have felt guilty too but you have to go and just make sure you don't do it again. You have a good conscience because some people would not care. Some people rate people negative out of vengeance which is clearly wrong.

Hi,I just want to say I am this kind of people who is not good at Enlish but trying to express views. I can understand you and yo don't need guilty because the responses maybe are really awful like you said above. Everything has its quality then we can assess good or bad. And I don't mind if someone rated me negative. I am happy that someone read what I wrote.Maybe it deserves negative. And at last I want to say you are nice person.

No,i have never rated a negative to anyone yet.But if, some day, someone's response is really rude,or what he said is totally out of line,i will definitely give him a negative without any guilty, they deserved it. But i will never give anybody a negaive just for their terrible grammar using as long as they response honestly.

As of now, I have not given anyone here a negitive or a postive rating. I have only given a few best responses to a few post here. Maybe one or two of my disscussions that I have started.

Hey, you have a very kind heart. I think you did all right even though you cannot know whether they meant to. One negative rating isn't going to affecte them that much. I think if you feel guilty over that than you must struggle with guilt-unless this is strictly a mylot thing. I would let it go and breathe, you didn't kill anyone so I think you're good.

Haven't given a negative rating. Some mylotters here are still learning to speak the language and I think they have done their best to send their message across. Too bad it wasn't good enough for us to read but I don't think I will give a negative rating. The most is, I will just leave it, soon enough with more postings and discussions they will learn to speak better and learn here in mylot. Get feel so guilty, I'm sure that was the first and the last time you give a negative rating. Sometimes we all do something that we regret doing in the end but we always learn from our mistakes.

Well, I don't like it when people use bad grammar and spelling, it makes it hard for me to understand them. However, I don't rate negatively because of that. I have rated negatively, though. I won't name any names, but... I've seen some a**holes here before. And no, I do not feel guilty for rating them negatively, I think that if people want to have a conversation, they should at least try to act civilized. The one thing I can't stand is flame wars.
