They are trying to give you diabetes

My husband had a panic attack and had to go to Concordia (that is the hospital that specializes in geriatric medicine (we are over 60 -I guess that means old.) They gave my husband blood tests, ekg, etc. to see whether he was not having a heart attack. Needless to say, we stayed there until seven pm when our sons drove us home. So they asked if I was diabetic and being pre-diabetic I said yes. So they gave me the diabetic menu for lunch. Guess what? We both got pasta and meat sauce, and green beans, but he got a lettuce and carrot salad with a vinegar dressing, and fruit cocktail, orange juice, and home made chicken soup while I got mushroom soup, rice pudding, no salad, no chicken soup, no fruit. So I did not touch the mushroom soup and we used to have rice pudding when I was young and dad still got diabetes. I wonder why? So in the evening I had what everyone else had. So do you suppose the diabetic diet at the hospital is designed to give one diabetes? Hmm.

I doubt it. When I started to read up on diabetes, they used to believe that if you ate a lot of fat and carbs, that got rid of diabetes. And that vegetables were bad for you.

I knew about the protien and fats, but never heard the carbs - I know they let mom have quite a few carbs, but only because she was only borderline remember this is 40 years ago

I'm sure that if I became diabetic, I'd be allergic to the food too

I was in the hospital last weekend for appendicitis and couldn't eat much but looking at the menu I'm surprised anyone made it out alive! Pasta is bad, nothing but carbs, but it's a part of every hospital menu. I also had a choice (if I could've eaten) of hamburger, hot dog, rice, pasta, pudding, cookies, cakes, jello (no low cal) with whipped cream. The vegetables were green beans and baked beans. Where are the lentils, the protein and fiber filled legumes?! I don't know why they would not give you salad and fruit, aren't those supposed to be very healthy for diabetics? Is your husband ok, was it just a panic attack?

I like pasta, but I also eat salad with it and was wondering why salad is forbidden to diabetics in hospitals. You would think that it would help us. If that is what diabetics get, no wonder it spreads.

Salads and veggies are good, but too much fruit can make a diabetic's blood sugar go up. That's not to say you can't eat them, but in moderation. Also, pasta should be eaten in moderation. It's high in carbs and will cause a diabetic's glucose to spike sky high!

I guess the reason diabetes is common in the colder or moderate countries is because it is harder to grow fruit there. So I guess diabetes is a a disease of lack of tolerance. When people lived near the equator they could eat lots of fruit, but when they moved north, they could not and lost that tolerance.

Life just doesn't seem fair most of the time. So even if a person is watching what they eat they can still get diabetes. My mom is worried that my little sister has it since she has alot of the symptoms. It runs in the family bad..I just hope and pray she doesn't. Maybe they mixed up yours and hubby's menu? Well, they supposedly have dietitians there to make up the menus so I am not really sure.

either that or pack their lunches for them. Which is expensive. I think schools should have a healthier menu. Instead of canned fruit in heavy syrup they should have fresh fruit. All they care about if cost at school and not the kids health.

They have (ha, ha) dietitians for schools but some still serve peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to kids who are allergic to peanuts and to those who are diabetics. Just this last year they took these sandwiches off the menu in some schools. Now they serve pizza and diabetic kids can't eat those either. Just like the white bread, rice and juice they have to avoid but are still on the menu. What ever happened to fresh sliced fruit, whole wheat bread, vegetables and the healthy foods we got when we were in school? It's no wonder the kids are sick and/or overweight with all those carbs they serve. Schools are raising the risk for diabetes in kids more now than ever. Parents need to step up and make themselves be heard to stop the nonsense and poor diets our children are getting in schools.

Personally in my opinion for most people and Clinics, Hospitals and such anymore it seems as if places do not really know what is Best for people with Diabetes and what they tend to offer for advice, etc. may not always work for others as well. I know that I have seen too many things to make me wonder and people I swear are Diabetic are still being left untreated, so the general rule for Diabetes is way off the mark for sure.

I think they are not up to date. I heard that years ago, people figured to treat diabetes you had to eat a mainly high fat, and high carb diet and that is the worse thing.

Neither did I. I thought their dietician was up to snuff and she would no more. I wonder if it is cost cutting.

I don't understand why they gave you pasta or rice they are both high in starch which turns into sugar. I would have asked someone like a doctor that was in the hospital before I ate any of that. The salad should have been yours since it had a vinegar dressing which helps lower blood sugar.I think they mixed up the order because it was going to the same room. Anyway you should know by now what you shouldn't eat and avoid those foods like you would a poisonous snake. As for the juice it is a no, no for diabetics, it has up towards 50 g of carbs per 6 oz serving. You can eat 1/2 orange but drink no orange juice. You can learn more about diabetes here http://www.squidoo.com/sixapart/Diabetes

While I don't think hospitals are trying to give anyone diabetes (it won't happen unless you're predisposed to it or grossly overweight), they don't seem to be very good at putting together diabetic trays. Or, perhaps they just mixed up your tray with someone else's. I have been living with diabetes for about 10 years and, as with other diseases and illnesses, researchers have come a LONG way in their knowledge of diabetes. While regular pasta will cause blood sugar to spike, whole wheat carbs don't. I'm not sure why you say you didn't touch the mushroom soup, unless you just don't like it. There should not have been anything in it to cause your blood sugar to go up. I've never heard anything about rice pudding preventing diabetes. If it's made with sugar and white rice, it would not be good for a diabetic. The best diabetic diet is simply a healthy, balance one.

It seems that hospitals are clueless on what patients really need. What is a regular meal if that is diabetic ? My hb is also and I would never feed him pasta,or the OJ are they crazy.I think these places get a kick back for putting you on meds. you don't really need using older, people with mental problems and hypochondriacs as there test cases.I make sure to feed my hb the right foods, exercise and we also take alot of supplements for various problems.I despise conventional medication but have come to realize that some people do need it.
