Should students work part-time?

Back in the olden days, students barely work part-time.When it comes to holidays, only a few words come to their mind and those are party, vacation and sleep.Nowadays I see many students working part-time.Not only during holidays but also throughout the course of the semester. They probably finish class late in the evening and rush off to work after that. The fact is they don't need the extra cash.Their parents can still afford to support them financially. Why are they doing it?Is it a sign that this generation has become more hardworking?

That's right. Never spend before you learn to earn.

I agree with you nowadays parents are able to support their children financially. But we must remember that times have changed.Back in the olden days one never had so many things available. For the children their wants are just too much. They have their peer pressure. When it comes to gadgets one wants to out do the other.Just take the cell phone for example the kids want the latest which the most expensive.Even their working parents will not be using them. They want clothes and shoes only of the branded stuff. They want to treat their friends at the happening places all this is a lot of money. So instead of pestering their parents they want to work and make money to meet their wants. In a way its its good in a way its not good too.It has its pluses and minuses.

I think students should do some type of work while in school. I'm noticing this attitude more and more with college students that they shouldn't have to work because they're in college and it means nothing to them because mommy and daddy are constantly paying for their bills. I think it's creating a lot of spoiled children (or rather young adults). I really think to help build responsibility and to make these young adults feel better about themselves and to really appreciate what they have at home and to see how hard it is to live on your own. I've lived with too many spoiled brats that never worked hard for anything a day in their lives and they're parents never forced them to work and it created spoiled, ungrateful children and it really bothered us because we constantly had to deal with their attitudes and listen to them bully parents into giving them what they wanted.

maybe its that... and maybe its the fact that many young adults now want to feel "independent". having money of their own feels like they can be independent from their parents. not asking their parents money to buy something that they like.

When I was in high school in my sophmore year I decided that I wanted to get a job. It was nothing my parents had said but they agreed that with me getting a job I would be responsible, get good job experience and also would get good real-world experience. I worked for only a few hours after school, it was at the local library. Now a handful of years have passed and I have finished college a year ago and I still work at the library part-time aside from my full-time job and I have a higher position. So definitely, students should take advantage of working when they can because it is all positive and they can pay for things that they need and also save for their future.

Yes I do beleive that students should work part time, school is so expensive and loans are stressful when you have to pay it back. It is better to take a lighter course load and work part time then to finish school earlier and then you owe money to the goverment.

Hello dicsyen! I teach in one of the universities here in our city. I have encountered a lot of students who are working while studying. Most of them have to do so because they won't be able to go to school if they don't. There are also those who just do it to earn extra money for additional allowance. At least they know, at a young age, how difficult it is to earn for a living.

When I was a student (more than 10 years ago), I worked part time and loved it. I think it's a great way to learn responsibility, both in terms of working and looking after your own financial security. It also helps in the long term once you have finished your schooling if you can show a potential employer that you have already worked. It means you have life experience as well as 'book' experience, which gives you an edge over other candidates who haven't had any actual work experience.

I think it is somewhat that way. They are doing it mainly for their future of to buy the things they like.Nowadays technology has advanced in a lot of ways and many people love to have one for themselves or get upgraded to the latest gadjet. Some might be thinking of their future that is the reason they are working now.If their health supports them they can do both studies and work.

First of all i do not know how you can say they dont need the cash their parents can afford to support them. Do you know them personally? I guess if you did you can just ask them why they work. Things are not like they were in the olden days. Many families are struggling. Some are single parents. Many families are two income house holds now where back in the olden days one income was enough. I was a single parent. My daughter started working before 14yr. She would babysit at that age. She has always worked. She saw the need to help me out so she could have extra stuff. I thank God for this exceptional daughter of mine. She is a scholl teacher now.

Personally I think a lot of students are pretty spoiled but right now I am working to pretty crappy jobs just to try and be able to save up enough money to try and further my education. It's hard to earn enough money though with two crappy jobs that kind of pay pretty bad wages.

I think generally if you are a student, there's nothing much you can do except: a) waiter/waitress b) cashier c) promoter d) data entry e) typist All these can't really earn you much but you have too stay on.Remind yourself that it's only temporary and not forever.Education is not permanent. You don't study forever.I really believe that you will make it all to way the top in the field that you are pursuing.Once you graduate you have the cutting edge because you have experience in the marketplace already.Right now,you are earning enough just to further your studies. One day,you will earn enough to do whatever you want. That's reality.Everything that is big starts small.

Yes, of-course! Students could understand the value of money, hard work and time only when they do this. Also, it induces a self esteem in them that they are studying in their own money. It also increases their self confidence!

I think it has negative and positive effect. The negative is the student will become lazy to study and will not have enough time to study or will skip their class because they need to go for part-time job.The positive is they will get experience in work's world. But i think they have a reason why they need a money and need to help their poor parent.

in the philippines, getting a job when parents can still send their child to school is a big thing. i mean the students still stay with their parents that even though these students are renting a place that place is still paid for by the parents coupled with their tuition fee. these students most of the time are aiming for something money they would earn can buy which most of the time is a luxury for their status. with all the dedication studying entails it is but normal to see bad grades which is not at all a good thing to have when applying for a job. filipino students can take a part time job during vacations if they want experience. i think in america experience is very much equal in grades when it comes to applying for a job.

Hello dicsyen. I think that it is a good thing for a student to do some part-time work. It is not only for getting some pocket money, but also for gaining some working experience. In fact, it is good, but it will be very hard for them because they have to balance their study and their part-time work.

Which olden days would that be? Students work based on need. If their families are not in a position to provide for their education, room and board and other essentials they are forced to work. In the true olden days education was something only those of privelege could afford.

Hi dicsyen, i guess i have a different view on this. Actually it is not a bad thing for a student to do part time work. Students here means undergraduate students, but not secondary school students. Secondary school students are not suitable for part time, except during school holidays. Students need to concentrate more on their studies and exams, doing part time job during schooling days will surely affect their studies. On the other hand, for undergraduate students it is still fine for them to do aprt time job. Time is more flexible during university or college study life. Besides, i believe they're matured enough to plan their time and get a balance between part time work and their studies. As long as the part time job does not affect their daily study time and they can manage it well, it is indeed a good thing to do having a part time work. By this, students will know and appreciate every single cent they earn from work, get some working experience, as well as reduce the family burden for the course fees. Me myself also had a part time work last time, as a home tutor (but it was during my final year).I enjoyed doing that and i can manage it well that it doesn't affect my studies, as well as earning some extra cash for my pocket money.

not only poor children work partime-jobs but only wealthy people..Im a student and i refer to partime for the school easy job and flexible working time, although its a school you can still study their. those students who did some partime jobs are a good example of success! and they have bright future. the exact word for me for those students have partime job are "Responsible"

its depends..sometimes students need to work to gain some extra money when they have no enough money to spend..like the money for buying the books in university is really expensive..and their parents cannot afford to do that for them..then they need to work part time to get the money and buy the book they need for study in order to success in the future..

I think there is nothing wrong if a student is also working part time. Besides the extra cash, they also get to learn how to be mature and responsible, and which is a great asset in itself.
