Summer Dinners

United States

It's been pretty warm here lately, and I wasn't expecting the heat because last week all the dinners I had were things that took a lot of baking time! This week I was smarter. Everything I bought was something that could be cooked on the grill, chicken, sausage, hot dogs, burgers. If it cools off at all I can cook it on the stove or in the oven if I want, but there's always that option. What sorts of dinners do you plan when it's warm out?

I have never cared for salads, and I have the figure to prove it, but this summer I have been fixing it at least once a week. I have been shopping by the week lately and it just sounds good. I will buy the salad stuff and a pre cooked chicken to de-bone and have with it. I do not know if it is any better for me (although I ao not add much cheese or dressing) but is has been great to not have to cook one night a week in trade for a salad.

That would sound good enough if it were just me. Unfortunatly I have the entire family to feed, and I personally cannot justify feeding the kids nothing but a salad for supper. To me supper should be meat, veggie, and starch of some sort. Salad would be a side dish to that. Which is why I choose the grillable meats for summer meals. I'm looking forward to the empty nester days when I can get away more easily and cheaply for dinner.

But it is not just salad but grilled chicken salad with all kinds of veggies. At the same time I do understand.

I always have trouble deciding things to make during the summer. Although, when I was a little my dad would pick up everything you need to make a giant sub and my sister and I would have fun putting it all together while my dad cut everything. That might be fun for your kids, keep them busy (always a plus),and keep you away from a hot stove or grill.

We went to Costco and bought a box of 40 hamburger pattys. We Bbq a few times a week. I try to plan around the heat and make things that wont heat up the house to much. We are eating a lot of microwave meals and salads too. Im trying not to turn on the airconditioner as much as possible.

W really have the same food al through the year except of course for Christmas etc. When it is raing then I usually make lots of soups. I like soup and make it in the slow cooker. We do eat outside a lot and I so enjoy that.

Whenever it's warm outside we tend to stay away from hot foods completely. We really don't grill anything anymore. We just eat things like tuna sandwiches, salads or other types of sandwiches. We really hate to eat anything warm or to fix anything hot. The air conditioning here just doesn't work that well anyway so that definitely makes a huge difference in the types of food that we eat.

I agree with you not wanting to heat the house if it is already hot outside. Since we live in Florida it has already been quite hot here for almost 6 weeks and I am always trying to think of things that are more summer like to make for dinner. We do alot of grilling and have alot of salads...pasta, potato, fruit. It gives me a little break because my husband does alot of the grilling and it more summer-like.

Hey kats! I know what you mean! It is starting to get warm here now too! I have to also be ready to change my meal preparations too! And I don't have the option of grilling so it is really more difficult for me! I have to cook things on top of the stove if it is really hot and that is still very uncomfortable! So I have to listen to the weather in advance to see what I am going to prepare for dinner! If it isn't going to be too hot then I can still fry pork chops or chicken which is my boyfriend's favorites! But, it will get more difficult as the weather gets warmer!

I like a salad plate. Some homemade potato salad, homemade coleslaw, some cold cuts such as ham or sliced beef, slices of cheese, slices of tomatoes, slices of cucumber, and some tossed green salad. You can vary the ingredients, and you can buy the potato salad and coleslaw if you want, although it is cheaper to make your own. I like to add some cold drained canned kidney beans, or drained canned mixed beans. Add some whole wheat toast with cream cheese, or flavoured cream cheese.

Its usually the same hamburgers, hotdogs, chicken, barbacue ribs on the grill with potatoes, macaroni, and pasta salads. I love the summer especially because I don't have such a big apetite like I do in the winter. Its so much easier to cook in the spring and summer. Enjoy your summer!

I have a small electric oven thaat can cooka chicken or a roast beef. I do either and have the meat to serve cold with salads. A raw veggie salad (greek, caesar, any) and a cooked one (potato, corn, beets) plus cold chicken, meat or fish is wonderful for warm days.

When it's hot out, I make a lot of cold salads (noodles and vegetables, potato, tuna and garden to name a few). I find the preparation is the worst part but I hate using the oven when it's warm out because it heats the house up tremendously. The noodle salad goes over very well. I also use an electric wok for stir frys (I know it's not really summer food...lol). The children like going to Subway alot so we have started buying buns, lunch meat, lettuce and condiments so they can make their own.

I hate turning the oven on when it is hot out. Things you can cook on the grill or even the stove top are things I go for. I like to pull out the crock pot in the summer too because it does not heat up the house like an oven does.
