Does anyone use things that are recyclable in crafts?

I love to loom when I have time and one thing that I do is take those pesky plastic bags that we get from the store and cut them, loop them together and use the loom to make summer beach bags or even purses. Everyone loves them and wants to buy them, but I just love to make them. They last for YEARS and so easy to shake the dry sand out of towels and clothes. They don't drop any money out of them either.

I've also seen that there's a way to cut them so you can crochet with them and make like door mats with them. No, I haven't done it, but I hear you can also stuff pillows with them

I seen one lady on line that made blankets for the kids to sit on outside. She called it a taco blanket and I guess it kept them all warm also. Some people also use VCR tape and empty bread bags.

wow, yeah I think the bread wrappers were where that started, because they've been around for a long time and the plastic bags only a couple of decades VCR tapes, noooo, I can't see doing that with them, I still watch them.

What a neat idea! I've seen plastic bags used as yarn for crochet and knitting projects, but I never thought of weaving them. Do you have any pictures posted of your bags online? I would love to see one!

Kaysue I would love to see a picture of the bags you loom with plastic bags . I have a friend who crochets with the plastic bags and its wonderful ! I make beeswax candles and make things with seaglass and seashells I find walking the beach . I guess that counts .

I can't find the picture right now, lost somewhere on my computer. But when I find it or finish the one I am working on, I will post it for everyone.

My crafting is 99% recycled materials, from plastic bags to old clothes and household linens to recycled yarn, boxes, cans, whatever I have on hand. I tried knitting with plastic bag strips but it was hard because there's no give to it. I never tried weaving them, but that's a good idea. I might try to put together a simple loom and use up the strips I cut.

i save any scrap of interesting paper (from gift bags, foreign language newspapers, books that are thrown out etc) to reuse on my gift tags and cards that i make. i really enjoy hunting for recycled stuff like that.

I like that, but have not tried it yet. I use clothes that are to bad to go to goodwill in my sewing projects. If I cannot use it for some project I take it to the senior center or nursing home because they use things like that all the time. If you do not know what your local senior center or nursing home uses for arts and crafts simply call them and ask for the activity director and then ask them. They can always use donations. I do not crocet or have a loom, but try to recycled, or reuse everything

I like the things that you have suggested. I never though about calling the nursing homes. You should try looming, it is fun and easy to learn.

kaysue4 , Make mobiles for the kids room using wire coat hangers. All you have to do is paint them bright colors. Or use hangeers to make wings and other accessories for costumes!
