The Modern Day Role of the Catholic Church

I always flinch when I hear people assert that the Church needs to come into the 21st century and conform with society. For me, it comes down to one basic question - which would create a better society, a Church that conforms to the society in which it dwells, or a society that recognizes the authority of Christ's Church and conforms to the messages he has delivered in both Scripture and Tradition? What are your thoughts?
