Now I know from when I was a nanny for an Indian family that there are different ways to make dal. I use to help cook all the time when I was working for the family but that was about 3 years ago. I'm ashamed to say that I can't remember for the life of me how to make it. I have now lost contact with the family due to moving from IL to CA. Can someone please help me and tell me how to make it? I have been having cravings for it and being new in CA I am not sure of many places that serve Indian food and which are the better tasting places. I prefer cooking at home anyway over going out. So any help would be great.

This is how I make dal or vegetarian dalcha as we call it.
1 1/2 cup of dal soak in water for few hours.
3 spoon full curry powder
2 shallot mince
2 garlic mince
1 inch garlic mince
1 Cinnamon stick
2 star anise
some clover
salt for seasoning
Plum sos
some cooking oil.
1 1/2 cups of milk or coconut milk (the old way)
curry leaf (optional)
other vegetables I like to put potatoes, tomatoes, zucchini, carrots and other kinds sometimes i put in young bananas and young mango, take your pick to suit your taste.

I don't know how they are made in India but lentils are very easy to cook. Just buy a package at the store and follow the directions. You can experiment with the seasonings that you like and you can add other vegetables like carrots or potatoes or even spinach.
