Is it just me, or is online spelling/grammar getting worse every few weeks?

Well, maybe not every few weeks, but it seems to be getting worse by the month (or maybe I'm just looking at more and more things). It definitely seems worse than when I first got on the net in about 1995. Maybe it's because of txtmsg lingo. Or maybe it's because computers are more common now, and easier to use, so any dingbat can get online. Possibly it's to do with the education system. Do they still teach English?Quite a few things I've read here are either just spelt wrong, or else they are in completely random gibberish, misspellings and wrong grammar mixed with txtmsg speak.
It's not just on these type of sites. I notice it on proper published articles, on places you'd think would have a proofreader, or at least hire people who can spell. These are supposedly professional authors, journalists, etc who are still puzzled by their, there and they're.
Now this site even has a spell checker, which few people seem to know about, even though it pops up telling you how many mistakes you have. I've noticed it misses some and doesn't correct grammar, and some up with some weird choices. It also doesn't like 'yeh' for some reason. Which is slang, but anyway...
I find it really funny when people who have english as a 2nd language speak it better than these first language people. I know of quite a few. for example a Dutch person who can write better English than quite a few people from USA/UK/Australia.
I don't have a problem with people getting things wrong if they don't speak English as a first language. I figure if they speak 2 or more languages, they are doing better than most of the population. I can usually tell the difference.
Am I the only one who notices this and gets annoyed with it? One thing I can't stand is supposed txt speak, which i can see the use of when it shortens words to fit the maximum into a limited space. but when they spell a word, using the same amount of letters, but just wrong, that annoys me. Especially when it's on the internet, where there isn't a size limit, usually.
Well, that's the end of my rant. I will say that I also used to type in IRC, and while it made my typing much faster, my punctuation and grammar and such went downhill. Usually because to type faster I was skipping things! That and not reading what I was typing (and not being able to touch type). But at least I was able to see what was wrong. It seems like a lot nowadays either don't know, don't care, or do it deliberately.

I have to say that I agree with you completely. I own the site learngrammar.co.uk, and hate to see when grammar is used incorrectly. I also hate it when people use apostrophes for pluralisations or for possessive pronouns- do they not understand that they're not needed?!
I think just a couple of lessons in English might be required to show them a couple of the rules which they should be following.
I actually posted a topic similar to this on another forum, and I got no end of abuse, saying that if they wanted to speak incorrectly then they would, it wasn't the end of the world, and that I needed to get a life.
Well, I think it is the end of the world. The point at which people can no longer communicate effectively is the point at which the world grinds to a halt.
I think people should take a look around the and realise that communication is the most important thing in the world. Without it, they are nothing.

Hello... that's really common, fellow. Language is very complicated. My mother tongue language is Javanese (the greatest language in Indonesia) and it is different with Indonesian language. But I think I am more fluent in speaking Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian language) than my own mother tongue language, especially the polite one. There are some ranks in my mother tongue language, and even I have heard that Javanese is the most complicated language in the world, so there is Java script, taken from the complicated language, Javanese. So, it is common, too, for English native speakers to have some mistakes or wrong in grammar and other aspects of English language.
Besides, I attended at university, taking English literature department. I have finished the study five years ago, but I am still feeling difficult to write good text.

Actually java was named after someone yelled java in a brain storm session for no particular reason.

Sorry to say something else about Java. The Java programming language was yelled out by someone who was drinking coffee at that time. The Javanese language is the original language of the people of the island of Java, Indonesia. It has many dialects. The Javanese were fond of drinking coffee.

Hi,
I had a similar rant a couple of months ago although mine focused on the text speak!!!
You are not wrong in anything you say and I completely agree!! I'll typo now, I have a habit, much like you describe of typing quick and not proof reading!!
Spelling is getting worse, people want to earn the maximum without the effort & it shows. Hopefully with some encouragement it will get better.
The population here on mylot is shooting up by the day so we'll always have people who can't quite grasp the English they were taught.
Thanks for reading
Have fun

Yes, I can't believe the spelling and grammar on this site. There are times I honestly can't understand what they are trying to say. When I type something I always double check it to make sure it's written correctly. Have a great day!

I definitely agree. Spelling abilities seem to be steadily deteriorating. And I'm not talking about spelling mistakes or anything . Heck, I make plenty of spelling mistakes for everyone. I'm talking about online chatspeak and everything.
I think chatspeak is ok in certain instances, like IM and such (even I do it once in a while), but I think when writing or having a discussion (like on mylot) it's important to type well if you know the language.
I've had similar experiences as you with people where English is their second, third, fourth, or even fifth language and they type it much better than people that I know have spoken it all theirs lives, which is really sad for native speakers.

Internet is the best place for the people to build up their english language.. mostly grammatical errors will come only if english is not their first language..They can use the internet as the stepping stone to build up their language if they really want to improve..i really appreciate the effort ..but still there are people who really doing it deliberately...

As someone whose mother tongue is not English I may not be qyalified to make any comments. I did once and was later accused of being judgemental. Nevertheless I still would like to throw in my opinion.
I believe there are places where it should be acceptable to use shortened form of the language. As has been pointed out it should not be done everywhere on the Internet. A language is closely related to the culture of a society. Destroy a language and the link to the culture will also be destroyed. Esperanto is not thriving because there is no cultural background to it.
I would like to point out that there is at least one browser where mtLot's spell checker does not work. It is Opera. This means that those using Opera may not realise they have mistyped a word.
all the best,
rosdimy

I dont want to sound rude by no means here but it is the internet and people can type, spell however they want too. Weather or not it's correct. But i dont use correct spelling or anything like that just because its the internet and im so used to not doing it. Now if it was something inportant then i would. but for this no i dont not that i do it on purpose it just dont pay attention sometimes and mess up. But its okay i had an english teach and dont need another or tell me something i did was wrong when i know what i did was wrong. Some people would say that people that correct others do it to make themselfs look better.

I have actually noticed that myself as of late. I have read major articles, newspapers and have seen websites that have had simple words misspelled and I think to myself that it's really simple to run these articles through a spell checker. I know that with the advancement of technology this has become easier and the Firefox and most new browsers have a built-in spell check and when I'm typing something in an email or on here I can ensure myself that I have not made any spelling or grammar mistakes. This will keep my post professional and understanding to both the reader and myself.
