i can speak 5...
3 native tongues... i came from two different provinces here in my country so i can speak two languages of two different towns... that is Bisaya, from the province where i grew up and Kamayo, my mom's province and this is the language they use at home, that's why i learned this too
plus our national national language which is Tagalog, a must since this is the one used at school wherever part of the country (Philippines) you are.
I can also speak English and a little Japanese...

Wow that is great, you speak many languages! Are the native ones very different from one another?
yes they are very different from one another...
there are some words that sounds and spells the same but have a very different meaning, in some provinces.
example: langgam
in bisaya that means a bird
in tagalog that means an ant

You're very fortunate and blessed to know 3 languages! I know a very little Spanish but that's it except for my native tongue, English. It'd be nice if we all spoke at least 2 languages. Our worlds would certainly be expanded.

I can speak about eight languages.. Sometimes I get so mixed up that I don't even realize I'm speaking four languages at once! Ok Let me break it down to you:
I am a mixture of four nationalities: my mum is South African, My dad is Mexican, grandmother is Portuguese, grand father is Egyptian. The ex is spanishSo here's a list of the languages I can speak and write fluently:
1) English (although am useless at spellings!)
2) Portuguese
3) French
4) Spanish
5) Afrikaans
6) Zulu
7) Swahili
8) Arabic
I can understand basic Japanese and German but can't write yet. I'm signing up for classes in the spring... Its a pain sometimes speaking too many languages as you end up sounding like Donald Duck!

I speak Dutch English, German and a tiny little bit of French.
Dutch is my native language, English is my second language and I would say I have an intermediate level. German is my third language but I've been only learning it for 2 years with big gaps between. And I've learned french for 3 years but that was 2 years ago so I forgot like 90%. I am planning on learning German again and I am still learning English.
I am proud on the opportunity to be multilingual.

I can only speak two languages well and that's French and English. I took Spanish for years, but I have trouble picking up how to speak it. I can understand Spanish rather well, but not speak it.
I would love to learn more languages. I am completely fascinated by language, but it's a matter of finding time to actually put into studying language and such.
On the other hand, I know a lot of people, especially in the United States, that take the view that it's either English or nothing. Everyone in the world, apparently, should speak English and they think it's a waste of time to learn another language. This view makes me sad because I think it's important to broaden your horizons and experience other languages and cultures.

I know what you mean. I think that language is a great thing, and it really is amazing that we all have different ways of expressing ourself vocally depending on which part of the world we have grown up in! I feel sorry for people that think language starts and ends with English.,.

My native tongue language is English. I learned French for five years when I was at school. I speak French sometimes on my travels like in France, the French speaking part of Belgium and in South Africa I was the only person a French national found spoke French. I learned basic German to help my traveling like to find the train station or to get a room. I am currently learning Spanish. I am so enjoying that and it will be great for traveling in South America.

I speak English, a little bit of German, and a little bit of Thai. I like to improve my German and Thai languages. I try to do that when I get the chance to visit Germany and Thailand.

As a kid I spoke both Dutch & English however after a divorce my mother moved my brothers & I to the UK. Since then my Dutch has declined however when I visit my dad, who still lives in the Netherlands, it doesn't take long to start picking up on conversations & words.
I'd love to spend 6 months out there and see how I got on!!
For now it will stay in the filing cabinet!!
Have fun
