Watch out! I'm here!

Mount Merapi - Mount Merapi
Indonesia
November 11, 2006 11:44pm CST
Today I would like to show you a shot taken yesterday morning at 7:45 am, during my flight from Jakarta to Surabaya, over the Island of Java in Indonesia. As you know, it is very difficult to take a good photo from an aircraft but, since it is the closest I ever got to an active volcano, I decided to post it in MyLot. In the workshop, I am posting the same photo, this time desaturated and framed. All critics and comments are welcome. ---------------------------------------- Mount Merapi, meaning “Mountain of Fire” in Indonesian, is the most active volcano in Indonesia and has erupted 68 times since 1548. It is located in Central Java, 35 km North to the city of Yogyakarta, and thousands of people live on the flanks of the volcano. It is a 2911m volcano and geologically speaking it is situated at a subduction zone, where the Indo-Australian Plate is sliding beneath the Eurasian Plate. It has been rumbling and spewing smoke and lava since April 2006 when seismicity increased and a detected bulge in the volcano’s cone indicated that fresh eruptions were about to occur. Active lava flows started in early May and some 17,000 people were ordered to evacuate the area. On May 27th, a 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck the area 50 km southwest of Merapi, killing more than 6,000 and leaving at least 200,000 people homeless in the Yogyakarta region, heightening fears that Merapi will blow. However, the quake did not appear to be associated with the volcano eruption.
