Why do we have social sites?

If its about communication we have many alternatives. We have emails, we have cellphones, we have messengers, we have telephones.

To have a connection, and to make more friends like your old and new friends, if ever you are far away from your parents and relatives, you can connect always to your love ones by using all this social sites,whether your classmates or your friends wants to do some happenings or some business to share they can tell to you right away.

I see. But most of the people just add friends that they don't know. I don't get it. Why not use the things I've sited to connect top other people? Also, lots of "friends" in those social sites don't even talk to you. And, old friends and new friends just talk to you on the first day in those site like "how are you? where are you from?" and stuff like that and then eventually stop talking.

Social sites gives information about people and one can add them accordingly if they found interesting and want to be friends. Phone, emails is there to communicate but it does not make sense to socialize with new people around you or your friends.
