How to see movie in Ubuntu?

I am new Ubuntu 8.10 user. I like it and i am so happy to used it. But I can't play any kind of video like .dat, .mpeg, .vob. Can anyone help me how to see this kind of file. I have no internet connection. I use internet in my mobile.
