No, I don't think you will go to hell simply for leaving the Catholic church, and I can understand why you would want to leave it (I ready the other posts). I am Catholic since infancy but I'm not really a practicing Catholic. I've been at mylot for 4 years now (I changed my name a few times) and have read many of your posts, I think you are a nice, decent, and kind person who loves Jesus and I don't think there is anything wrong with you for questioning the church when it and many of her members have done so many questionable things in the past few years.
What it really boils down to is that you have to search and find your own truth and if you happen to find an organized religion that adequately represents how you feel and practices it's worship of God in the manner that you beleive is right then you will be where you need to be, whether it is the Catholic church, or some other denomination or faith entirely. God knows your heart, I do not think you will be punished for choosing a path that more accurately reflects how you choose to get to God. Peace be with you.

I thank you for your kind words..It use to be I thought only through the Catholic Faith can one go to God I was so conservative...but little by little I watched others hurt and became hurt myself..The nicest people to me were not those of my own Faith.
I don't say one faith is better then another anymore..and I don't know what the future holds for me.. I know I love God and believe in Jesus and His words.

I don't mean that for anyone..I am asking the question in regards to myself.. I would like to find out what others think who may be here and are catholic. I love to hear from all.
I believe Heaven is full of many people..not just Catholics..and not just Christians..and I just may get excommunicated for saying this;)

My dear Little I know what you really meant. All such things are game of these people. Frankly people do use religion to make you fear them.

Hello there! I don't think if you change religion you will go to hell for as long as you keep on believing the same God. What is important is you are still keeping your faith in your heart and still do the things in accordance to such faith, after all, it's not so much of the religion that saves us from hell but mostly, it's in our actions.

hi littlefranciscan,
why did you ask that? are you having doubt to your religion? but just afraid to leave it? one thing i can say to you is if you have a doubt on this religion, why don't you give yourself a chance to research on other religion's teachings? i think there's nothing wrong with that.research on other religion's teachings until you find what your heart & soul really needs. its not too late to search for the true Church that belongs to Christ.
to stop being catholic will not bring you to hell, who knows, maybe stop going there will bring you to real salvation! :-)

I really don't think so........why would you go to hell for not attending church........yes i agree that many catholic doctrines mention that to attending the Sunday mass is a sin and should be attended devotedly.......i guess it is linked to the commandment keep your sabbath holy.......but i really don't think it consumes that much of a time to attend Sunday mass, does it ????
I too sometimes feel not like going to the church as i sometimes don't like the entire atmosphere of catholic church these days.......the church is just stuck to its doctrines and is changing all the old customs and traditions it used to have.......it is also getting too bureaucratic in nature......for a simple thing like baptism of a child needs to to run from pillar to post seeking approval......sometimes i wonder who is the real god.......
So i feel though it is no where mentioned that you would go to hell......i fell there is no harm in attending a 1 hour mass, specially if you are not working.......just my thought though......
have a nice day !!!!

Sometimes however..sitting one hour at Mass..is equivalent to one hour of heJJ I have seen the actors and actresses prance across the altar and laugh and carry on as though they were the ones people were coming to church for.
then i listened to everyone complain about this person and that in the pews before mass
and then i see the leader come in and for the sake of change tear up everything that was in existance.. that everything has to be new .. where the old veteran humbly made dud and focused on people more then the decorations.and church beauty.

I don't think so for my experience I'm not going to church every Sunday anymore but I don't stop believing in God. I stop going to church because I don't like the sermon of the priest because it is always political and not related to the gospel. I seldom go to church but I still believe in HIM. There some religious person out there that they don't practice what they preach so why I let myself believe in them. I think if you have faith in God even if you don't go to church for me you don't go to hell.

I will have to make some bold statements here. These statements could seem offensive to some but this is the truth.
Leaving the Catholic church does not send anyone to hell. But staying in it an practicing it would lead you to hell.
Believing in Jesus Christ is the only way to heaven and there is not other way.
Christianity is different for all other religions. All religions teach us to be good in the site of others and in our own sight. but Christianity teaches how to be good in God's sight. Also Christianity does not teach teach that being good will take us to heaven. It teaches us that only accepting Jesus as our savior will take us to heaven
If this hurts I am sorry but truth has to be said as it is.

I can only tell you what I believe (and that is also the consolation that I believe has been given to me and is genuine). I believe that there is no hell except what we create for ourselves by holding ourselves apart from God. I know that God loves all of His children - not only the ones who go to a particular Church but also those who worship in a mosque or a temple or coven or even who go to none. I know that because I asked Him once and He showed me. He wants us all to accept His love and is waiting for each one of us to do so. Hell, if it exists, is only for those who have known His presence and who, for some reason, have refused it and yet know that they themselves have chosen to be apart from Him.
No, you will not lose your soul if you stop going to Church. Nobody loses their soul - they may only think (or wish) that they have. You soul is as much part of you as your shadow because, just as your shadow is the image cast by a source of light, so your soul is the image of God ... 'that of God' ... within you. As long as God loves you, you cannot lose that image.

I think you already know the answer to this question. Of course you won't go to hell if you stop being catholic. Being Catholic is simply one branch of Christianity. There are many others. All you need is Christ's salvation to go to heaven. Talk to God and trust him to lead you to the path that is right for you and will allow you to grow in him.
God Bless

I don't believe that, but then again I'm from another Christian belief. I do enjoy the Apochrypha though.

I really can't tell you what would happen to your soul. Only God knows your heart and what's in it, and only He can judge something like that.
I'm Catholic as well, and I try to read a few minutes of Scripture a night as well as praying. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. :D

of course not. That is such a twisted logic, what about all the other people who are not catholic but are genuinely good? will they go to hell? I am a Catholic, but I don't practice my religion. The thing is, all religion teaches the same thing, be good to others. I think no matter what your religion is, if you know what the ultimate reason for your living, and you accept what is good and what is bad, then the chances of you going to hell is second to none.

Don't be afraid and worry yourself with questions like "will I go to hell?" and such...Just do what you want to do, you'll understand when the time is right if something is wrong.
Let's take an example, say that you don't stop being catholic because you're afraid of being sent to hell after you die and you live your remaining life like that, saying that you're a catholic when you don't want to be one and you don't feel yourself as one. You basically live a life full of lies, you'll be lying to yourself, your family, friends, anyone that knows you and more importantly to God himself if you PRETEND you're a catholic. If you live a life full of lies, why shouldn't you end up in hell anyways? I mean you would be fooling everyone all that time until you die, right?
So my opinion in this matter is this, do what your heart desires. If you ever feel you made the wrong choice just go back and do something about it, remember that what you say to people doesn't matter as much as what you truly believe and God knows what everyone believes. So think with your heart, not your brain, God will help you and show you the right path if you have doubt. Never mind what others say about your choices and do what you think best, and since when can only catholics go to heaven anyway? The name matters not, its the substance that matters most.
