Are some Vets frauds? What gives them the right to charge you through the roof?

Here's the thing, my dog became sick so suddenly that no one knew what had happened. He went into the vet's office the next week for a hurt leg that kept getting worse. The vet called it off as a muscle that has been over strained, but yet she still didn't know exactly what was wrong with him. The next week he goes back into the vet hospital, the condition getting worse. She looked at him once more, doing the same thing that she did the first visit and comming up with the same solution charging us for her time. She gave him some pain medication and sent us on our way. A week after that, we are getting frusterated because we have no clue what's going on, we take him back in telling them that he's doing good on the medication but still the condition isn't letting up or getting better at all. So what does she do??? She takes some blood, and x-rays. How much does she charge us?? 400$ for something that he really needs. It doesn't even cost a human 400$ just to get blood taken and x-rays done. When the results come back she says the same exact thing that she said the other two times; just a muscle condition but she grows more concerned because he keeps on losing weight so she recomends that we switch his food to something with more protein to help him gain his weight back. The next time we bring him in, under her request, she tells us that she wants to recheck his blood, urine, and shoulder. We allow her to do the blood and urine. They have him for the whole day and they charge us 356$ for all that. The next day, the vet calls us saying that our animal is very sick and needs etreme medical attention. He needs to go in for a aultrasound, more x-rays, and a whole bunch of other tests, so we do them. They costed us 600$ for that and 100$ for talking to the surgeon over the results and didn't even tell us that they were going to charge us. It turns out that our dog has a tumor in his shoulder connecting to his spine and it's effecting his kidneys making them shut down, when all she wrote it off to be was a simple muscle problem. Now the vet wants us to give him surgery that we can't afford, she wants us to come up with 2,000$ and pay it in full right then and there. We can't afford that, so we're keeping him on the pain meds to see how he will handle himself till we can come up with the money. We come accross Friday evening and our dog runs out of meds, we call the vet and they tell us that they can't get them re-filled until Tuesday because it's a holiday weekend. What is with that!!! That's not right! How dare they call themselves a vet hospital if they can't even help my animal! All they are doing is charging us so much money that we can't even make the house payment for this month, but hey, our dog's worth it. So here we are on Sunday and our dog can't even walk wihtout whining, or move for that matter without screaming in pain and they want us to wait!? All they had to say for themselves was "Sorry" after we asked, "So you're going to make him suffer?". They also put him on a special food after finding out that the protein is what's hurting his kidneys even more. This food they are charging us $1.76 Per can. That adds up. This food is apparently a perscription food and needs a written perscription to buy. The vet never told us that! We had to find out through someone else when we tried to buy a can because now he's out of food. They want us to wait till Tuesday for that too! He'll starve. This is bull! Charging us through the god dang roof and not even helping him at all! Is that right? Is that right at all? All they do is charge and charge but never actually help our animal. It's extremely frusterating to see my baby be in so much pain and not being able to do anything about it. What.. are they going to wait till he has to be put down to give us another option? This is so wrong that now I don't trust any vet with my animals, everyone is so expensive. Is it right for them to charge so much for something that is needed greatly?

It seems to me like you should pick up all his records, you paid for them so they are yours and see another Vet. Call around first to dog breeders in your area, just tell them you need a good Vet your dog is very sick. If more than one breeder refers you to a Vet see that one. Tell the Breeder you can't afford a lot of money and that you have had trouble with Vets before. Don't tell them anything about your present situation with your Vet, you never know who's brother in law he is. I can really feel for your frustration. There are some human pain meds you can give him, just make sure you don't damage his kidneys. Check on line. Good Luck

Yes, you are right. If you doubt your vet, you should go to the other to check, it's even better to ask others to suggest another vets.

Wow, that is really awful. I imagine there are some agencies you can contact to complain about your vet as their are for human doctors. The cost of veterinary care is very high as well as the cost of medicines. I don't get everything done with my dog that ideally he probably should have because I just can't afford to pay for everything especially in this time of economic turmoil. Good Luck with your situation. Give your dog a kiss for me.

I think its just merely having the title 'Doctor' that they get such priviledges of charging ridiculous prices and your right, they should be entitled to actually 'heal' if they want to use that title so loosely instead of just giving you lip service. Do most veterinarians take insurance? I thought my friend who breeds pomeranians said something about that one time.

a vet will usually ask for id or identification as if they treat a animal badly then they can be sued
