What is your view on driving while talking on a cell-phone?

First off, I would like to add clarification to the topic. I mean a standard cell-phone. Im not talking about using bluetooth headsets, or in-car bluetooth calling. I mean holding your cellphone up to your ear with one hand while trying to drive.
I strongly feel that this should be against the law. Many accidents of many magnitudes are caused by driver-distraction. Most of these "driver distractions" are their cellphones. When talking on the cellphone, having only one hand on the wheel, I feel that drivers can not put their full focus on the road, and what is ahead of them. In emergency situations, the driver cannot react fast enough either.
Personally, I have a big problem with this. Strathcona County is going to be putting a ban on talking on cellphones while driving, but only on some roads. Roads like provincial hi-ways will not have this ban put in place. Just the roads within the city I would assume. That is a good step. That means city council has to listen to the ever-growing call of the people and their demands. I really hope it gets to be a provincial ban, then spreads to every other province in Canada.
Is it so hard to let the person calling leave a voicemail? Is it so hard to pull over if you must answer it?

I actually do believe that we should follow the laws that have been placed and not use a cell phone while driving. I know that this law has passed in most places and is being heavily enforced and it is in my opinion a very good safety measure that has been placed. An accident can happen in a split second when the driver is either reaching for their phone or even dialing. The best way to avoid putting our lives or someone else's life in danger is to either not use the phone while driving entirely or to use a hands-free bluetooth headset.

That is a very good statement. It really can happen in a split second. Even at city speeds. Bluetooth hands-free kits are debatable, but definitely a lot safer than a cell-phone user.

Hi Canowyrms,
I totally agree with you. This is one of the most annoying things there is. I get so ticked off when someone is driving too slow or just being careless because they are talking on their cell phone. It is dangerous and should be against the law. I don't even understand why they want to. I don't even answer mine when I am driving. Whoever it is can wait till I am at my destination. There is nothing worth causing an accident and maybe injuring someone or even worse killing them.
Thanks for the post:)

Thank YOU for your post!
I feel the same way! People are too focused on their conversations to drive properly!
Its annoying when you get someone backing up an entire lane because they are on their cell phones while driving. My brother yesterday was nearly rear-ended because the driver was on his cell-phone. the driver was so close, that if my brother had not moved forward a foot or so, there would have been damage. and my brother has a baby just over 1 and a half years old!!
I am glad to hear that you have common sense and can wait a few minutes to call the fellow back.

Hello Canowyrms,
I agree with you. Using cell phone while driving should be banned long time ago, when they first introduced cell phones. I hate seeing drivers using one hand to drive and another to talk. I don't care if they want to endanger their own lives but please, don't involve other innocent people on the road. Here in my country, they only need to pay fine for that which most rich drivers don't care if they have to.

I am one that still talks on the cell phone because my phone does not do Bluetooth. But, I hate doing the phone when I am driving, but, sometimes it is a return phone call from a doctor or I am having to make appointments on the run.
I hate when my kids or hubby calls to see "what are you doing?" Ah, I am driving. I love when I can just shut it off and just drive. I have been lucky and have had no close calls because I will stop talking to a person when I am driving and tell them I am in heavy traffic or trying to park the car and hang up.
I feel like a cell phone is both and blessing and a curse. You can't go anywhere without a phone ringing.
I have seen people really get off task while driving and talking.

I feel this is a bit unfair. I feel the ban should be placed if people are driving recklessly or carelessly while on their cell phone, not necessarily just because they do. Like maybe if they gave people tickets if their disregarded a signal or were pulled over for unsafe driving, they should be banned from the use. However, a lot of people can multitask so I don't feel placing a ban on all drivers is necessary.

I feel that driving and talking is alot better than driving and texting. When you drive and text it causes alot more distruption rather than just talking. i mean people sing while they drive and they dont get condoned for that. Its doing the same thing.

What are my views on ppl driving while talking o their cellphones?
Its a big problem. You can take away their cell phones and they still have their wireless car phones. So if we are talking bout governing ppl who are not completely or less attentive to the raod, Well thats impossible.
Even ppl on medication or with hearing aids, heck ppl listening to the radio can be termed as less attentive.]
For the ppl who wanna yap on to their phones caring less for other ppl's property of lives, I just wanna say its totally justifiable to give them the one finger salute.

to be honest i think it is very distracting and how did you make the call in the first place. you had to have taken your eyes off the road for a few seconds to at least dial the number or scroll down to the desired number and if that is not distracting i do not know what is. it is dangerous and that is why they have the laws they do. pull over if you need to talk on your cell while in the car. i do not answer mine while i am driving. i would love to have a hands free headset but cannot afford one as we can barely put food on the table right now.

We went for years without cellphones and Not being able to reach anyone till we got home. So people should not be talking and driving at the same time. There have been so many accidents due to this. If you don't have a bluetooth then don't do it!

yea talking on cellphines while driving is a big no no in my opinion. I mean whats the point in being extra efficient and doing two things at a time. I have seen friends and cab drivers driving rough and picking up calls at the same time. Yes it shuould be against the law.

I am not really in favor of talking on the phone while driving. It is very dangerous. Talking and texting while driving is really hazardous. I always tell my friends not to talk on the phone while driving especially when in the highway and in high speed. Before you know it, accident have already happened because of calling and texting while driving.

I second you Canowyrms, this should be banned as we tend to ignore the consequences and end up hurting ourselves and others badly. I feel more bad about the one who gets hit by some other careless person, who was just busy answering the phone. I mean what the hell... life is precious and it shouldn't get wasted like this.

this is something that must not be allowed but sometimes we cannot just ignore some important calls, for instance a call received from a child that is left at home by her mother cannot be neglected because the child might be in danger, so i dont oppose taking calls while driving but drivers must find a safe place to take their calls , that wikll be a lot safer

Here where i live talking on a cell phone while driving and even texting is not allowed and if you do get caught you do get a fine for it. It was made to where the young teen couldnt do it but now it has been placed where NO one can do it. Yes some people can do this but its still dangerous for anyone. And i agree a lot of accidents do happen because someones on the phone. A Couple years ago a lady was on the phone and had 3 children in her Van and she Hit another Car head on Keeping in mind that the other driver the lady had hit was a teen boy who was on his way to school and when she hit him head on it knocked him into a pond and he was killed soon as she hit him. Yet from another One that was on the same road and was comming up right behind them seen everything and the person said that the lady didnt feel quilty and showed no worrie for the teen boy that she just knocked into a pond and said that the lady never even got out the car or off her cell until 2 mins before the cops got there and then she played like he was the one that hit her insead of what really happen and the witness that seen it said it was her fault because she was all over the road and on the cell instead of paying attention to what she was doing. This was an 18 year old boy whom didnt get to finish out his life because a lady was on the phone. Sad really But some people just dont care about anyone else but themselfs and its a shame.

i think talking on the phone or texting while driving should prohibit as it can cause accident many accident that had happen due to cellphone using while driving. just to make sure your safe in the road you should not use your phone while your driving, because its either you or other people might get hurt or even tragic incident will happen so lets be safe and no phone using while driving.
happy mylotting!!!

It's too bad! If we use cell phones while driving:
1. We can't respond correctly to either of them. So important calls go wasted.
2. We get distracted and there is a definite chance of accident
3. We get more moved towards the phone call and show less attention to driving. So, if something happens, like a man or a vehicle crosses your way suddenly, we can't respond wisely
4. Most important: We threaten the trust that the people, who travel with us, have on our driving skills!

I will say it's certainly very dangerous to drive while talking on the cell phone. You tend to usually lose focus when you are on the phone. This poses a lot of danger not only to the pedestrians as well as the vehicles on the road. Plus, with only 1 hand on the wheel, you may not be able to control your vehicle well. I do agree that all countries must ban drivers from using the cell phones at all times when driving on the road. If you really need to use the cell phone, I will suggest that the driver find a safe spot to stop, and then make the return call/return the text message quickly. I do not think that it is too hard to do that.
Currently, my husband is driving, and he also do not use the cell phone when he's on the road. If I'm in the car too, I will help him in answering the phone call.
Happy mylotting...

For me, talking to someone through a cell phone while driving is a situation prone an accident. It's because even if you are already a professional driver, no one knows when will an accident will come your way so it is always better to ensure your safety. I am pretty sure that the person calling you will surely understand that you were not able to answer his or her call because you were still driving. Keep safe. God bless!

I don't think cell phones can be banned while driving as long as people can eat, argue, put make-up on, shave, or do any of the other things that people can/will do when they are driving. The only thing they should be able to do is drive if talking on the cell phone is banned. Even your passengers, such as unruly kids, babies, fighting couples, and even the radio can be more distracting than your cell phone.
