Well, you are important if someone introduce you to someone else.I do understand a little though, you do want to feel like a moron if you put your hand out and the other person doesn't shake it.You should really stop putting yourself down like that,i'm sure someone think you are important...Have a good night.

It depends on the circumstances. If I am being introduced to someone, I usually do shake hands. If I just meet someone some other way, I only shake hands if they offer their hand first.
I do not mind shaking hands with strangers (you can always wash your hand later); but, I really dislike it when a stranger thinks we should "hug" when we meet for the first time and/or they want to do the"cheek kiss thing". That is way too close for comfort.

In my culture shake hands is an acceptable way to meet people. Here when I meet some local friends sometimes they want to hug me or kiss me. I know it’s their culture, but still feel uncomfortable. I never move the first step to kiss them or hug them. To be honest so far I still don’t know how to do it properly. If you watch what I have done you would laugh at me. So I always try to avoid kissing or hugging. However shaking hands are more natural to me.

I doing it, because it is also a kind of respect, to the people you meet recently, and show how you feel about him or her, it is also a kind of conversation.
