About to Give up on Helium

I've been rather frustrated with Helium lately - mainly because I'm not earning a penny off the 30 articles I have posted there. If you don't know one of their rules to earn is you must have a rating star - members rate each other's articles.
Well, while off line for a several months I lost my rating stars. I've been several weeks trying to get it back but still don't have it...
Now I've also lost one of my writing stars :(
I do believe I could use me time and energy on other more productive things than on a site where I have as yet to have been paid a single cent but they are showing my articles...
So, do you have something you want to rant about?

I feel your frustratiopn with Helium. I only earn pennies off of my articles. Sometimes feel like I have to babysit my articles and others with the rating and writing stars. If I don't read and rate other persons articles I will not get paid at all. If I don't keep leaping my own articles to keep my stars I will earn pittence for upfront payments if I submit anything.
My writing stars keep fluctuating. The most I can have right now with the amount of articles is 2. I have had 2 many times, but then I loose one. I leap it goes back up for a long while and then I loose it again. It is rather frustrating feeling like I have to babysit my articles and leap just to keep the stars I deserve.
I wish you luck on getting your rating stars back, soon. You probably are not being paid anything because you don't have any rating stars. I think it is wrong for them to keep money just because someone takes a hiatus from the site. They are still making money with your article, so they should pay you. Well, in a perfect logical world. :o)

Yep haven't made a penny all month because of no rating star and I have a majority of articles in top ratings - agree if their making money I should be which is why I most likely won't be adding much if anything there.

I still can't get a writing star. Of course, I have stopped submitting articles. I am trying to reach payout and in another 6 years I might actually make it. I think when I reach pay out I am going to close my account. How do you get upfront payment with them though?

it's been so long since i last went to helium, and i don't even have that many articles there. i think i'm gonna close my account there and shift all my articles there to hubpages. it's doing ok there, not as good as other people but at least i know that there are people viewing there and all.
what's more i don't even have any stars at helium, neither rating nor writing ehehe because i've been either too busy or lazy. i can shift my articles can't i by the way

Yea I'm not going to close my account yet at least but am not going to put any more articles there unless they change this rating star business. I'm not familure with hubpages so don't know what their rules are.

I am starting to write articles for Associated Content too. I wrote on Helium but like you never noticed that I was earning anything. I am slow earning on AC but I am not sure how to get more page views.I would like to know more about them. If you have any suggestions, I will take them.

Don't know if you read other comments here but I still have not reached payout, $25 on helium, but have earned over $75 on AC - that money is in my paypal or I've spent already. I certainly would say AC is better. As for page views big thing is write on topics that will be searched on the search engines, hot topics, and make friends over there although that's not where you'll get your big views. I have another discussion 'tip for freelance writers' there is a ton of information from several other AC writers you may want to read that for ideas. Add me as a friend here and we can exchange AC profiles via messages if you'd like - can view each other's articles.

I hear ya! One of the reasons I haven't been all that active with Helium is that it seemed pointless to just get paid via page views and I've never had a star rating. I don't have quite as many articles there as you do. So many of the writing sites have become real major disappointments with me, so I'd rather stick to Associated Content where one can opt for upfront payments and page views--I've gotten more money via AC than ALL the other writing sites combined 20 times over

I'm feeling the same way - I like the upfront pay at AC and then the page views are just extra. I also like that you don't have to wait years before you get paid. I need to be more active on AC - just seems like time slips away. I am working right now on a no brainer article for there but most of my mind set is on other things right now.

They recently upgrade the rating system. I had lost my rating star as well there for awhile. I finally got it back this week. Yeah, I was mad at them for awhile as well. Have you tried writing to the Marketplace yet? That is where most of the money I made off of Helium came from.

That's great you got your rating star back. I had I think 4 when I couldn't be online because of moving. I still don't have it back and have been working at it for a month now. I did write a Marketplace piece but it wasn't selected.

Hi Byfaithonly, so sorry to hear that. It's painful to put in so much effort and not seeing the result.
Fortunately Helium does not require exclusive rights to the articles, you can repost the articles elsewhere to earn income.
There are a lot of writing sites available. Some are rather unique, ehow.com is one that I like to read, but I'm not writing for them, I'm not good at writing instructions.
Hope you can find a writing site that allows you to earn a reasonable return on your articles.

Yep - going to use my strength and talent on other things and not waste my time with helium... I actually used to write for ehow as a ghostwriter when they first opened - I mean very very first articles on there were me :)

That's a great idea about doing the outline form for ehow. I actually haven't written anything for them since I parted ways with the company I was working for - ehow hired the company to write for them when they first started. I was paid very well for them but understand from others ehow doesn't pay near as much as I was making as a ghostwriter through the company.

Hi Byfaithonly, ehow is still using Demand Studios. Demand Studios pays very well, and has very stringent requirements for its writers.
Ehow writers do not get upfront payment, only those writing for Demand Studios have the right to choose upfront or page views payment.
I do think you can consider writing for ehow, either through Demand Studios or direct through ehow.

Personally for me, I was Never impressed with Helium and now mostly do my Writing either here or on AC. I actually one of these days have a ton of stuff I would love to see if I can publish sometime on AC, but due to having our Condo for Sale this has been a set back for some of my other routine as well. But seriously maybe your Best bet is to concentrate on myLot and forget about the other as have Fun as well. Wishing you the Best.

I'll agree with that one, have fun and get paid at mylot. I haven't been doing much any place hours at call center leave me mentally, physically, and emotionally exhausted so really hard to do anything the few hours I have in the evening. Weekends I try to write but just not enough time to do all I want to do.

I understand your frustrations with the site. I only have one star for writing (even though I have plenty of #1 articles). I don't spend nearly enough time on there leapfrogging. I would rather write new articles. So many times it seems a waste to have to change a perfectly good article to get it to move up. The rating system frustrates me to no end because obviously a lot of it is skewed. What can you do?
I am always nervous at the end of the month to have my one star for writing. No star = no payment, so I don't even like to write anything at the end of the month, jeopardizing the work I have already done. Yikes.
One thing you can do is repost your articles from Helium to Associated Content for page views only...it's still extra cash in your pocket!
Good luck with your writing, for Helium or otherwise!

Yes, going from Associated Content to Helium is a much better method. I didn't realize that, however, and posted a couple of hundred articles to Helium, so now the only way to get them over to AC is to repost for page views only. It's worked out ok in that I just do it when I have some extra time, and my per month total is gradually edging up.

Someone here at myLot, can't remember now who it was but was on one of my old old posts here, told me about AC first then Helium. I do have some I haven't been able to find a title at helium to post to though so just have on AC. I've been paid over $70 at AC with I think 37 articles and haven't yet gotten a penny from Helium.

I didn't know we could post helium articles on AC didn't think about it but actually most of my articles on Helium were posted on AC first :) get the up front pay there then flip to Helium. There are a couple though I wrote for helium could do that. I'm the same - hate rewriting would rather write fresh.

That's a shame...I read some of your articles recently and they are very good...heaps better than those of certain people who go round claiming they are "published authors " or "writers".
It must be frustrating to work so hard and then get no where like this...just don't give up your day job....OK?

thank you chimrani - still not earning there so not submitting anymore article to them until/if I get my rating. AC is much better as far as I'm concerned.

On May 19 the rating system at Helium was given an upgrade. Rating scores have been much higher since then, and almost everyone can hang on to their rating stars now.
The rating system is completely random and anonymous and anyone trying to cheat will lower their own rating score and lose stars. In a group of 40 articles, about 360 rates are required until the articles settle in order, then rating is reactivated whenever a new article is added to that title, or any of the articles is leapfrogged.

Well, I've been faithfully rating 1 or 2 articles each day (may have missed 1 or 2 days but did 3 the next day) but still don't have a rating star. I know at one time I had 3 or 4. I just can't believe this is happening and am really disappointed at this time because I know a lot of people really like Helium and I did too until now.

You can under certain circumstances - you would NOT be able to submit for upfront payment as they have already been published. Would also suggest that you rewrite at least the first paragraph of the article so that search engines won't pick up the duplicate posts of same content.

I was extremely frustrated with helium after just one month. When I signed up I received the welcome email enticing me to post the first article within 7 days to receive the $5 bonus. I wrote two other articles thinking I would get my first writing star and when it didn't happen I was confused.
It was in the weeks after I learned about competetive titles and rating stars and now with 22 articles, 2 writing stars and 5 rating stars, my earnings are accruing rather well all things considered.

Faith, I've had that problem also. Today I logged back into my account at helium and added some articles, and was taken back by how many of my stars had twinkled out! Like you, I am trying to work my way back to at least where I was a few months ago.
I think mostly the articles at helium that earn the mighty dollar, are the ones that you can earn from publishers that are looking for one outstanding article on a particular topic. This I have tried, including entering a contest, with no luck.
All this ranting has makes me want to find my soapbox and my twelve-foot ladder! (The higher they are the harder they fall, umm?)

Yea all I do now is login do a couple rates and log out - end of month am going to request my payout and don't figure I'll be doing anything else there. Oh well, most of the articles there I had published at AC first and I'm earning more there by far... I've had one Helium article I got $5 for a site to use it and other than that just the basic earnings, I just don't have time to keep up with the Market Place and then do research and write just to have it rejected because there were 50 others before me :(

hi
even my gurl has a lot to rant abt helium-she had submitted abt 8 articles and one of them was doing ok as far as earning was concerned.but suddenly there was a bolt frm blue and Helium abruptly decided to freeze the earning and also stop future earnings just bcoz she is citizen of India-so called non-english speaking country. But u can submit ur articles to some other sites which will surely bring u a decent income.

I'm sorry to hear what happened to your girl - I honestly don't know the helium rules on writers from different countries, I know a lot do only accept from English speaking countries which I question because here on myLot I find a large number of India members who speak English.
I am back earning from Helium but still haven't reached payout so will see how long it takes, I'm not submitting anything new at least for now.

hi
thanx for ur response-as far as the differentiation between english speaking and non-engligh speaking countries is concerned-I feel India shud qualify coz there are more blokes who can speak english fluently in India as compared to entire UK.
