At what age, do you allow your kids to have a cellphone?

My nephew and niece keep on begging my sister to give them a cell phone, because majority of their classmates have one. They felt humiliated if they don't have one themselves. So, my sister got soft, and sign up a family plan with T-mobile. Now, each one of them has a cell phone to play with. They were on the cell phone most of the time last time I saw them. Especially my niece, she always text, and text constantly. That really drive my sister crazy. Sometimes, she just overused the text message. My sister gave them a first warning already. So, at what age do you usually allow your kids to have a cell phone. I would say at their junior year or senior year in high school.

Hey, To tell you the truth, kids truly don't have a reason to have a phone if they are under 16 yrs old. If they are younger, they don't think about the usage consequences, you could end up paying hundreds per month. Make sure you have a good day, Happy Lotting!!

If the child is responsible and mature enough to understand the importance of a cell phone and the essentiality of using it then I will give him/her the cellphone. However all depends on the child's understnding if ever he will be able to use the cell phone properly or not. But no matter how understanding they might look they can be doing something wrong with the cell phone by curiosity so it will also depends on the trust I have upon him/her to give the phone. I will wait till my child gets 11 years or 12 years to give him a cell phone.

I don't have any children yet but my mom got each one of us a cell phone when we reached 10 years old. All three of us were huge into sports so my mom would have to have us carpool with different people because she couldn't be at 3 places at once so she was able to keep track of where we all were and for emergencies. With my sports and band and whatnot we had competitions/games all throughout the tri-state area. So she really needed us to stay in touch. I always did have to tendency to go over my text messages but that's why my mom got unlimited text messaging so that we won't get charged. But when I have kids, I probably will get them a phone when they start playing sports and being out of the house more often.

I guess it depends on the maturity of the child. It sounds to me like your niece and nephew are not mature enough to handle having a cell phone yet. I think it is fine for a child to have one at around 12 if it is just to contact them while they are at sporting events or something similar. Not as an everyday thing. I would say about 15 for them to have one on a daily basis.

I will see about it first. How can he/she manage their own goods? And also more important is to see wether he/she can manage their expences during have cellphone for trial. If they can pass all of this.... i have no reason to not allowing my kids have it.

I bought all of my girls a cell phone. My youngest is six years old and the oldest is ten years old. My youngest daughter has to leave state 3 times a year so she needs it to contact me. The other two girls got one because I found it is easier to keep in contact with them when they go and stay away from home. They don't use it unless they are away from the house. They also have it in a jewery box in thier rooms.
