How do you meet people?

I find that I lead a totally isolated life. I don't like it but I don't know how to make friends and meet people. I have been to church and I haven't been able to meet anyone. I don't have a lot of money to join a spa or something like that or place where you have to have money. And even when I meet someone I don't know how to make friendships. I don't go clubbing either and everyone I met on My Space wasn't real but a "Nigerian Scammer"!!! What to do?

i am an american living in australia. all i have to do to meet people basically is speak. everyone here loves my accent. i just started school a while ago and everyone likes to come over and hear me talk to them.
