I have Pentium 4 ,2.2GHz and a RAM of 250MB. I got net connection. The speed of ma computer is not that good. What should I do to increase the speed. It takes time open applications. When i open 3 or 4 tabs on the web browser and try to navigate to each tab frequently, it gets stuck. I also got Mca Fee installed. If I increase my RAM will it give me any benefit or increase the processor or try out some thing else? Good Computer experts solve my probs....

I would suggest overclock. Here how to do it on your own. Step 1 - Get whatever tools you need: screwdriver, needle-nose pliers, motherboard manual, cooling hardware, etc. Step 2 - Find out whether your motherboard can be adjusted in the BIOS setup, with jumpers or not at all. Step 3 - Find out clock-speed limitations of the motherboard. Step 4 - Run all Windows and any third-party diagnostic applications you have. Fix all system problems. Step 5 - Make a complete backup of your system, documents and applications you don't have on CD-ROM. Do not overwrite these copies. Step 6 - If you have a BIOS-adjustable motherboard, make changes according to your motherboard manual, and skip to Step 15. Step 7 - Shut down computer. Step 8 - Leave computer plugged in to surge suppressor. Step 9 - Disconnect all peripherals from computer. Step 10 - Remove cover of chassis. Step 11 - Ground yourself to computer with any professional grounding equipment you have. Otherwise, ground yourself by touching a metal part of the chassis. Step 12 - If your motherboard has adjustable jumpers, locate the jumpers that control the CPU speed. Step 13 - Use needle-nose pliers to change jumper settings. Move jumpers to positions indicated in your motherboard manual for the clock speed you want. Check the Internet for recommendations. Step 14 - Install a CPU heat sink, heat-sink compound, and a specialty cooling fan, if appropriate and possible. Step 15 - Put system back together, and reboot. Step 16 - If computer does not boot, and CPU still works, try lowering the clock speed. If that doesn't work, restore the original configuration. Step 17 - Check all functions, and run a CPU-intensive program. CPUs have rated and maximum speeds. Exceeding the maximum speed is far more likely to cause problems than more conservative adjustments.Overclocking an Intel processor explicitly voids its warranty. Other manufacturers have similar exclusions. Intel prevents overclocking of some CPUs by disabling higher multiplier settings.Expect a shorter life for an overclocked processor, including the possibility of its immediate failure. Prepare to deal with seemingly unrelated problems that can be caused by overclocking: destruction of other internal components, lost data, system and application crashes, and an inability to boot the system. Such problems can occur randomly or materialize well after you have altered your motherboard.

Yes you have my point my friend :) always play smart by investigating first. Knowledge is very important before doing something. But its cool to do some experiment with our own hardware, because now all of them is very affordable price and easily to get. By doing so, we have the experience to tell others :)

Yeah, overclocking a P4, while it can increase speed, is a patently BAD idea. That architecture is just flawed (I had to live with one for years before getting my MacBook). Most P4s are basically the same, but they are set for a higher clock speed, so basically overclocked from the factory. Even so, this one could probably be overclocked to 2.6 GHz safely if good cooling is provided.

upgrade your ram add a slave hard drive or an external one use the external one for all programs you put on other than the operating system also are you running xp or vista? which ever one your running look up virtual memory on your help and itll tell you how to up the virtual memory in your pc. i recommend putting it to min 1500 max 4000. that way it acts a bit like normal ram and speeds up your pc. stopping unneccesary start up programs can also help speed up your pc. keep it clean, defragged all the time as well helps heaps. uniblue suite is a good program to help your performance and maintenance too pm if you need anything else. seriously tho processor wise unless you can go dual core you may as well leave it alone it wont make much difference. also you need to find out if your motherboard will support dual core too. my guess is prob not. soz

Very good information frey thanks. I have personally ordered an extra RAM chip. But I am seriously going to try the external hard drive as well, as my family members say I have so much "stuff" on my pc. I do defrag & use CCleaner and Advance OneCare on a regular basis. What is the uniblue suite? I love all kinds of pc programs. Probably why an external hard drive would be a great idea for me.

uniblue suite is a program that cleans and maintains your files by deleting dbled files, unused and temp files and keeps defragging and also runs a defrag for the bios to keep it clean and running smooth. i use it on 4 diff pc, (2 of which are laptops) 2 win xp, 1 win vista basic, 1 vista premium. it helps heaps but it does cost tho unfortunately.

Scan your computer for viri and spyware with something NOT McAfee. I recommend Avast Home and Spybot Search & Destroy. Uninstalling McAfee before installing Avast is a must. McAfee is a resource hog, anyhow. After that is done, You can add RAM to your computer, I recommend replacing all of it and getting 1 or 2 GB of new RAM. Shouldn't be very expensive. You _CAN_ upgrade your processor, but this is a more involved process and it is a bit harder to match a processor then memory. I guess you need DDR 400 RAM (just an educated guess off of all of the specs of your computer. I do not know this for sure.), look on Newegg.com for that. Your processor is probably a socket 478, but it could be one of two other types.

Also, backing up your files and erasing your hard disk, then reinstalling Windows can help A LOT. I do this to all of my Windows systems at least every 2 years.

I guess everyone pretty much said everything about your problem , but you can also tweak your internet browser ( assuming you use Firefox ) to minimize the virtual memory it uses, so it won't crash when you're browsing. Try and look for some guides on how to do that , there are plenty. And you can also find helpful programs to try and kill unnecessary processes or useless things in your computer. Try Ashampoo PowerUp 3 , it's quite useful for slow computers. As for using an external drive for your programs , i don't think that's a pretty good idea since it will slow down your computer even more..

Agreed about the external. They are good for backup and transport. An add on internal hard disk can do you good, though. Put all your files on it (you can redirect 'My Documents even'), and (advanced setting) change the virtual memory to use that drive only, not your system drive.

The main problem of slow down the system speed and the internet speed is VIRUS.So at first you will scan you system with a good anti virus,if your system will virus free 75% you won.I advice you to upgrade the computer with new motherboard and RAM minimum 1GB,You can solve your problem 95%,Use the OS Linux 100% solved. happy mylotting

well sinduja, have you resently scanned your computer for virus or adwares. if not do that first. Then, delete all the cookies and temp files. After you have completed both these tasks restart your system and check if it is helping you. Another thing you need to chk whether the system has an inbuilt fan inside the CPU. Working for long hours is bad for coumputer's helath too - the heat produced slows down the process. And if you have tooooo many softwares like photoshop, flash or something similar, remove them is you dont use them! And if you are a game freak then uninstall all the games from your computer hardware because they can slow down your process. If nothing works, try taking to a software engineer or a ciomputer service personnel for more insight on it. All the best.

You can do one thing. You can replace you RAM and processor with higher configuration. This is the best solution that can work.

Looks like you got a very old computer. With a 250mb ram and a P4 of 2.2 GHz, I would say you cannot expect your pc to be fast. Previously, it may use to be fast because of the brand new condition of the parts and stuffs but eventually, as time passes, computer parts looks their efficiency and thus reaches the stage which you are in right now. PLUS you got McAfee in you pc which is a resource hungry moster. So I would suggest that you should change everything as recent processors cannot fit into the P4 motherboards. Or if you are in tight budget, upgrade your RAM while will help you to boost the speed and let you run more tabs without hanging.
