I borrowed the title from Mr. Rey Dizon(I hope I got the name right). Ever since I heard his brother talk about the line "Philippine is a rich country pretending to be poor", I started reflecting. Know what? He is right. Ever tried checking other countries? Japan buy their food from other countries, Singapore don't have beautiful natural beaches, and Switzerland don't have enough land to cultivate_ but Japan and Singapore are very successful while Switzerland exported the best cheese and the best chocolates in the world.
The Philippines is rich. We are surrounded with beautiful beaches and we have big lands to cultivate for agri-products....

Yes your right, Philippines is a rich country but some people are too lazy.. Some choose to go to other country and work to earn big income... If you can see... most of the rich people in the Philippines who owned big company are not really Filipino... businessman like Lucio Tan, SY and etc are Chinesse... Ayala, Zobel and others are Spanish... And look at those Beach owners here... Those Beach are owned by someone from US, Canada, Australia and etc... Philippines have wide land to cultivate but they are too lazy... They just waited for someone from other country to cultivate it.. They just waiting for money to come and dont bother to dig it our of themselves..

I think not all are lazy. I believe that there were just some of our countrymen who doesn't have enough education to be equipped enough in using our resources.

7,101 islands...that's a lot! but how come we are still way behind Singapore and Japan and to think that compared to the Philippines, the size of Singapore is like Metro Manila alone or Quezon City. Singapore is one of the most traveled cities/countries in the world. who would never wanted to visit Singapore, its one of the cleanest place on Earth.
going back to our home land, the problem is on the government. one prime factor why we can't progress fast enough is because of the corrupt government officials and probably the law as well.

Maybe we need to rephrase that... I think it is not the "idiot mass" that you mean, maybe you mean the uneducated people, and it is not their fault if they don't have enough money to be educated.
Maybe the best politician to vote for is someone who values education so muc

yup! we're very lucky that we all have this resources but the problem are some of our leaders.. they do not know how to manage effectively and they are corrupt. sometimes i think that what if marcos is still alive? despite of the bad things that he'd done, he still manage to make the philippines one of the best and rich country way back in his time..

We are a rich country, we just don't realize it. We are deflating our resources and we take advantage of the natural beauty of our country. It is a sad thing that we do not capitalize on our advantages, and sometimes, we over-capitalize on it, like boracay... It is being too commercialized and it's natural beauty may soon fade. I just hope that our government do something about it, and not just worry about all those scandals in the net...

I truly agree on you. There are many other beautiful beaches like Boracay... but I guess the government just don't have tourism tactics to promote other places. I hope now they realize that it is not only Boracay that can make our country popular. Sigh!

There's an easy solution to that.
PUT ALL THE GOVERNMENT OFFICALS TO JAIL and use their money to improve the country. (sorry for the caps, me not mad. hehe)
Philippines is a great country, we have an abundant natural resources, our location is good, and we have a potential to be a strong country too. Why can't those gov't officials do their work instead of robbing the nation's money? geez

hi kyss_smyle! ^^
i think there's some truth to it. aside from our natural resources, we can look at out labor force too. there's a lot of Filipinos being hired by other countries to work there. we're rich in manpower. and we also have a lot of smart scientists and inventors. only our government doesn't know how to cultivate them. and sometimes, they don't even support Filipino inventions. and there are cases that these inventions would be pirated by other countries.
we have a lot of undeveloped lands. we have them at the provinces. but people choose to go to the city and try their luck there. they prefer working in a company than tilling their lands. i guess that's one problem why Philippines is poor.

the country is rich in resources but the people here are poor in proper attitude. some don't care that much. as long as they're in their comfort zones, who cares about other habitats?

I guess our country has everything a rich nation could ever have. I mean look around and you'll find vast natural resources. But it's just sad that we take that for granted.

Philippines is indeed a rich country (in terms of natural resources, culture, and people). But being an archipelago of more than 7,000 islands has become our own disadvantage as it resulted in our country being polarized in development initiatives. Eventually, this led to much inequality in our society in terms of access to resources, education, livelihood opportunities, social services, etc.

Yes, I do agree with that line. Philippines is a very rich country when you try to look on the natural and mineral resources, but the problem is, we are severely managed by corrupt officials that our riches were mismanaged and taken for granted. If we just look within ourselves and see what we can do to improve our lives then we don't have to scramble to go to another land.
My earnest wish right now is for our country to have a sensible leader to be elected in the upcoming national election (2010)to realize this long cherish dream of being a progressive country. We can make it if we work together and discard pride, envy, dishonesty and hatred.

Yes, I agree, definitely. The Philippines is rich. But we become poor since we are ignorant and do not utilize our resources.

Hi kyss_smyle,
YES, indeed you are right! But you are measuring the richness of 3 different countries on the geographical & agricultural aspects.
BUT WHY ARE WE STILL POOR? Because we do not use our (FILIPINO) resources?
Take Switzerland as an example, The expensive Swiss watches came to it's marketing end. What did they do? SWATCH! Is'nt it brillant to keep the income rolling.
We were NO. ONE! in the whole of ASIA at one time.
We are not rich?
We are so poor that we have to beg all over the world to sustain our own children, open your eyes wider and look around you.
I just feel very sad with this illusion.

Yeah I too believe in that saying. The way we think or maybe our politicians would like us to think so that they could continue to plunder our wealth. We've been for so long been abuse by these rich politicians. They slowly put our nation to a standstill so they can gain more wealth than we common Filipinos from really enjoy the wealth that is around us.

It is really good that the country that you live in is not poor and can produce its own food. I mean living in a country wherein it is self sufficient, leads to a stronger position altogether. Wishing you all the very best and happy living!!

Very true. Often times, Filipinos fail to appreciate what Philippines has to offer. I have to say, that on many occasions, I feel guilty about this. Maybe because we were raised to appreciate products from other countries...in fact, a lot of us even want to go abroad (again, I am guilty).
I have read a writer who praised Vietnamese for wearing their national clothes to school. For them, it's a nautral thing...but to us, I wonder how we'd react in dressing up like Imelda Marcos in going to school? That's just a simple example... how much more to our products? You mentioned that we have beautiful beaches here, but ever wonder why a lot of Filipnos still prefer the not-so-beautiful beaces abroad?
Tsk, tsk... sad, but what can we do...this is reality.

You are right with it,Philippines is a very rich
in natural resources. The problem is the leader
and the officials leading our country doesnt know
how to help the poor ones in the place.
Many lands to cultivate but few are choosen to
work for it, and a few owns it especially those
well known personnel and forgot the tenants that
working so hard on their lots to have a good harvest.
I know every one will be rich in the country if hand
in hand working each other for the unity of the whole
country not crab mentality. Like the other country's
their poor country but became rich after doing something
in unity for the benefit of all mankind.

Philippines is blessed. It is a promising place for development. However people leading the nation are not equipped enough with guts to make a quantum leap towards the top. They never support the scientists and the engineers as much as like in the other rich countries. However, there are people who became poor because they were robbed off of their land by some greedy landlords in the past until the present. Most of the victims of these cases were the natives.
I say too, it is not the president's fault to have faulty people in the government. So I am wondering why there are many people who wants her to resign. Should they place another in the position, wouldn't the mistakes of that new pres. be the same as the previous one? When would the cycle break? Shouldn't people let that person finish what she had started?
