Are you good enough to do anything professionally?

I am not good enough in something to do it professionally. What I was thinking about when I thought up this question, was how many people on mylot seem to be able to cook really well. I mean really well. So I thought perhaps some of them were good enough to go into catering. I am pretty sure Grandpa Bob could set up his own produce market since he grows so many things, and they turn out so well. So...?

Right now I've got a few people I'm cooking for who are very happy with the meals I make for them. I've been trying to think of how I can expand, and I might if I can get some more customers, and maybe I'll have to hire some help. I saw a food network challenge once with a couple of ladies who call themselves the casserole queens. They dress up in fifties outfits and deliver casseroles to their customers. They have it set up on the internet so the customers go online to place their orders ahead of time. I'd love to do something like that, but I live so far out in the country I'd have to drive too far.

I love cooking and do a good job with it when I am in the mood to cook or if it is appreciated. I love making crafts and have sold some but crocheted things are becoming part of the past since it seems people rather have things that have been manufactured from a machine better then from someone's own hand. I love gardening and if I had a proper spot and proper tools I am sure we could make a small living off selling the vegetables if we tried. But we have no place on our land big enough except for a small spot. My husband used to do woodwork and he could make very beautiful things like eagles,butterflies,ducks,hearts,etc.. with your Last name on it with a hanging house number. But he got out of that when his eyes bothered him to bad. I have thought about making cookies, different flavor fudges, different cakes and so on and selling them down at the country store in front where I live. Or even a bake sale. Others have done it and gotten good results. I guess we can do pretty much accomplish alot of what we are able to do if we just set our minds to it.

I think that anything worth doing is going to be hard, and that it takes practice. I know that there are a lot of different things one can do to make money for themselves or family, and seeing as the possibilities are endless, I just don't know where to start to suggest. Food preparation is great but sometimes you have to be careful about it, with food poisoning and allergies.

Hey Ambie! Yes, I do think that Grandpa Bob would make a great
produce marketer!lol As for me, I don't have a clue! I can
cook, but I sure don't think I could do it as a professional
and make money at it! The only thing that I was ever even
slightly good at was typing and there isn't much call for
that anymore since everyone does their own typing these days!
So now I have virtually no special skills that I can even
think of! I did work as a Legal Secretary and a Medical
Assistant, but that was a few years ago so I don't know
what I would be able to do now to make money! The thing
that I did do best was typing and word processing really
fast, but that is no longer needed so I am a loss for
a skill!

I cooked simple dishes and more on filipino food. I enjoy and love cooking, given a chance to learn other cuisine, am sure I'll be doing good as well.

I was always told what a great cook I was since I could do French, Italian, Mexican, Oriental and a lot of other types of cooking, but French was my main forte and yes lots have suggested opening a restaurant...mmmm...as much as I love to cook though couldn't think of doing it all day/night long...I would equate it with a person who loves chocolate and their dream/ideal job would be to work in a chocolate factory--I guarantee you after awhile that person would probably want to puke if he/she saw or smelled one more piece of chocolate

Hello AmniePam. I can do some simple cooking for myself, but if I have to cook for some certain number of people, I am afraid that I cannot make it. And even if I can make it, it is only some vegetables that I can cook for them because I like vegetables a lot and usually I just cook vegetables and eggs. I am just an amateur in cooking.
Speaking of Grandpa Bob, I am sure that he can offer a lot of vegetables for us to cook as he has so many varieties of vegetables on his farm. lol

I read a book about a woman who went to China to immerse herself in the culture, and to learn how to cook with a culinary art that Chinese chefs seem to have. She took lessons from cooking masters, and the book was fascinating. It's amazing what she learned from the people, from the chefs in the school, to the out of the way places that had delightful food, but were somewhat of a secret. She enjoyed searching out the 'nooks and crannies' of the Chinese art of cooking.

I have no idea if I'm good enough to do anything professionally. Shoot I've been trying to figure that out since I was a teenager. If I knew I could make money at it then perhaps, when I ask my family or friends what am I good at I get very little responses. I ask my hubby what area do you think I'm good enough at to do as a job... hubby's response.."you make cute babies"

I cant say my cookery efforts are up to professional standards though it is part of my job so I suppose you could say I am a 'professional' lol.
I have in the past been a professional dressmaker, knitter and card maker and I've sold some of my drawings, though I draw for pleasure rather than profit.
Often we are given a talent but cant find an outlet that lets us benefit financially from it.
You may not be able to cook well enough yet, but if you enjoy it and keep practising who knows where your skills may lead you.

I'm left-handed and learnt to knit and crochet by watching my Grandmother. My grandfather was a great cook and dog handler, my Mum was a dress maker and taught all of us to sew and my Mum and Dad were both artists.
Not so much talent as being brought up by people who loved to pass on their skills! We were also taught that you could do anything if you put your mind to it!

Lately I've been thinking about what I could do professionally, but more in the athletic department. I work at a sports bar and I see these people bowling, or cycling, even playing pool and making millions of dollars. I don't need to make millions, but even a few thousand a year would be really cool for just doing something as a hobby. I'm not much of a poker player, so that's out. I'm thinking my best bets are speed walking and cycling. I'll explore the possibilities further when I'm not pregnant and can actually start some sort of training.

Yay! You understood my question! I think I ticked off a couple of people because they thought I meant were they good enough to have a job - period. I thought it was clear I was referring to hobbies, lol.
You're pregnant, that's wonderful. Are you expecting a boy or girl? I would love to have a sport as a hobby and make money to boot. Cycling seems to get bigger and bigger. I think my legs would fall off though. I'm SO not in good enough shape!

I don't think I'm a professional anything...especially NOT in cooking!!!! I never went to college, just a 6-month business school that got my my job cos I'm very good at typing and shorthand. (And shorthand is so old-fashioned now). I never tried to be a professional...I was always, and still am, a follower. No matter what job I had, I was always part of the group, not the boss. But I'mm very content with that! Tell Grandpa Bob to go for it!!!

I believe I have the ability to cook professionally. I am very dedicated to the kitchen. Sundays being the only days I have free time at home, I spend more than half of the day in the kitchen, baking things and preparing for dinner. I like to experiment by making my own recipes and putting a new spin on old classics and I have never made something that tasted horrible..or even mediocre. I am very adventurous in the kitchen (just yesterday I made a chili that had cocoa and allspice, gave it a sort of mole-like background and gave it more depth). My friends and family would support me if i chose to open a food business..but i wonder if i make a career out of it will it still be fun?

I could possibly be a home care provider. I can care professionally, does that count?

I would love to put my drywalling experience out there. Being a female, some people do not take me seriously. But I know my job and can do it well.
And I can wash windows well, without leaving any streaks. Not sure if thats what you mean. Great parent, love kids, would be a great care giver.

I'm not sure if I can cook well enough to do it professionally. I've been told I could open up a catering business and it would do well. I love to bake and cook and have catered several dinners for church and civic groups. I just don't have the faith in myself to jump off and do it for a living.

I probably should have been more specific. What I meant was, is their a kind of hobby you do, that you are so good at it, you could do it professionally. There are a lot of professionals on mylot for sure. But I was thinking more along the lines of something we do for fun, but we could turn it into a career. Like Grandpa Bob enjoys growing things, but it is fun for him, a hobby.
