Do you put salt in your food when cooking?

For years, I didn't add salt to my cooking, mostly for health reasons. Just recently, I bought some salt to use when making mashed potatoes and it's really made a difference in how things taste. Salt is unhealthy, that's for sure. But it always makes things taste better. I don't put a salt shaker out on the table at meal time, cause that might lead to over use. Do you put salt on food while it's cooking or leave a salt shaker/container at the table for others to use on their food?

I use sea salt and if you use it moderately or sensibly, then it doesn't do you any harm. We do need to replace a little of the salt lost through sweating, my friend. I like my potatoes mashed with pepper and butter... mmmmmm. Brightest Blessings.

I dont always add salt to my cooking but there are some things that just need a bit of salt in. I think as long as salt is used in moderation then it is not a problem its when it is used too much and in everything thats when it is unhealthy.

I saw a tv show recently where they were saying that salt is not as bad as everyone has been making out. That was all I needed to hear...although I did listen as to why it was ok to have salt but I don't remember the reasons. I have a friend who uses salt on every mouthful of food....I was waiting for him to die or at least to show the effects of too much salt....but he is fine...very healthy, rarely ill.

I do not use salt in my food. I prefer to enjoy the natural taste of food without any seasoning. However when I find the food too bland, I use soy sauce. We do not use salt at home.

i always put salt in everything i cook. if i dont i will surely get complaints from my family... we dont put salt shaker on the table... what we have on the table is the seasoning, or fish sauce... if the dish lacks some taste, it's what we add here. i cant live without salt, i can eat rice and salt only... by the way, i disgaree salt being unhealthy, it's not. it just become unhealthy when you consume too much of it. =========== It is healthy to have salt in the diet because it provides sodium, an essential nutrient. We should get around 2,300 mg of salt a dayl. Presently, many people get 4 - 6 grams a day. It is healthy to get 2,300 mg a day to help meet body needs. It is not healthy to consume high levels of sodium -- especially in people whose blood pressure increase with high intake. So, low levels can be healthy and high levels of salt can be unhealthy. reference: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Is_it_healthy_or_unhealthy_for_salt_in_our_diet =============== salt is essential for healthy digestion, balancing internal fluid levels in the body to prevent swelling, and proper functioning of the nervous system. And did you know that adequate salt levels are a factor in getting a good night's sleep and for preventing muscle cramps? Without salt, calcium absorption is hindered, leading to osteoporosis. Salt even plays a vital role in sexuality and a healthy libido. reference:http://www.sheknows.com/articles/7642.htm

Thank you! That's what I meant. I thought I'd said that. Yes, an over abundance of salt is bad. That's what I was suggesting before. You get what I'm saying.

Using salt isnt unheathy, our bodies actually need salt in order to function properly. Cows are given salt licks to make sure they have enough salt in their diets. Problems occur when we eat too much salt. Using salt makes a big difference on how the food comes out, and certain dishes do come out better when you put salt when cooking. We dont put salt shakers in the table when we have other people during meals. Our favored cuisine is known for its strong flavors. salt is, however, available if they ask for it.

If you use just a little salt, I don't think it's that bad. I don't use salt on a lot of dishes though because I was brought up with very little salt on my food. My grandma lived with us and she was on a salt-free diet. So if there was salt in food it was food she either didn't eat or my parents would first get her portion out and add salt later on. So basicly I don't know any better and eat a lot of things saltless. I don't even like the taste of salt on my food 90% of the time.

I would add salt if the recipe called for it, otherwise I wouldn't use it while cooking. I do use salt when I am at the table. I don't see anything unhealthy about salt.

And, for many people, salt isn't a problem. There are weight issues in my family and that could lead to hypertension. I'm just micro-managing the situation and hoping it doesn't turn into health problems. Sort of preventative maintenance.

I guess you are the only person i have seen who doesn'tput salt in the food. how does your food taste then....i guess pathetic:S. Anyway salt isn't a poison ok. So its perfectly normal to use it in a small quantity. But yes you can avoid over use. Yea i put salt in my food.Along with it other spices too. I like spicy things. and yes i do put the salt shaker on the table for things like boiled egg. so if anyone wants to use salt as much as he wants on it, he can. so the point is don't be afraid of salt:P

yes, I put salt in my most food. I like salty food. I don't like sweety food very much. I think salt is necessary to our life. Without it, a person cannot be healthy. I can't imagine how a peron lives without salt. As a Chinese girl who lives in North China, putting a lot of salt in food when cooking is very common. Of course, some people likes sweety food instead of salty food, but it's impossible for them to live without even a little salt.

Thank you for your kindness. I will take care of myself. And I'd like to try less salt in the food in the future. Since salt is not so good for my health, it's a good idea to eat it less and less. Take care!

Anything in excess be it salt or sugar is hazardous not only to health but also to wealth and environment. The key word is moderation and to be used with discretion. Although one can't resist the temptation to remind that the world is made of different tastes, it is always advisable to take this advice with a 'Pinch of salt'.

When it comes to cooking, almost every meat or pasta dish I create doesn't use regular salt, but instead I use Lawry's Seasoned Salt and McCormick's Garlic Powder. It has a lot less sodium than regular salt, and makes a BIG difference in the taste (A great difference). And no matter what you are cooking, whether it's pork, beef or chicken, it can come out delicious. I love it, and I refuse to cook without them. :)

In my country, salt must needs be put in cooking. For example, there is a kind of dish called "sweet-and-sour any stuff" as "sweet-and-sour fish", the main reasonings of this dish are sugar and vinegar, but must needs be put a bit salt, only do it so, the taste is very good.

I pult salt in the food while I am cooking. We don't have a salt shaker at the table (anyways...besides me..no one sits at the table for a meal). The salt I put is just for taste. My husband usually prefers more salt than I use. Sometimes, he adds a little more to his serving alone. But hes lazy to do it all the time and so he eats the 'healthier' version that I give him.

I never did this until my I moved in with my hubby & he complained so since then, I add salt to the water when I'm boiling veges. I don't put the salt shaker out at dinner but hubby always adds salt to his dinner before he eats it. I also add saly & pepper to any steak or lamb chop about half an hour before cooking - it seasons them really nice & makes them taste extra yummy.

I put some salt when i am cooking, to taste the food better, and maintain the true flavor of the food, especially in vegetable dishes, and when you cook fried fish to add flavor to the fish and shrimp and sometimes i use it in chicken, but now i use crispy fry and flour to the chicken, i put some salt in egg and fried rice.

I put some salt if the recipe calls for salt. Salt is bad for your health but most thing that we eat are bad for us. They say to just use salt or other food and spice in moderation try not to overdue. But I fine that is hard to do. I agree salt does bring out the favor in food so I put some on my food before I eat.
