True Blood vs The Sookie Stackhouse Novels

Okay, so I am currently up to date with the Sookie Stackhouse novels, and I finally sat down and watched all the True Blood episodes on HBO On Demand. So which do you guys prefer and why, the television series or the books? I have to admit that while the television series does provide entertainment, I happen to like the books more. I am not really all that happy with the way the television series portrays the characters. I think because I am so far along in the books, the characters have already solidified in my head. Therefore, their television counterparts often come across as wrong, phony, or just plain awful.
