I'd say its time you made them read Sherlock Holmes or Agatha Christie. its time they really appreciated some great books by some extraordinary writers.

Perhaps the Redwall books by Brian Jacques?
My sister and I liked those when we were in sixth garde.

I think Tuck Everlasting and Holes are great books for 6th graders.

I loved... Animal Farm, Tuck Everlasting, and The Scarlett Letter. Green Mile and Memoirs of a Geisha were good to.

Hi mhethess, can you ask them to read Reader's Digest? I remember my teacher made us subscribed to Reader's Digest, and she would set worksheet based on the different articles in Reader's Digest, so that we had to read half the magazines to find the answers to those questions.
Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys are forever popular with Grade Six. I do not know if Enid Blyton's school gals stories (Malory Towers and St Clare) are suitable for modern days children.
I think you can search for titles in Amazon.com for more ideas.

Can you give some examples of books that you already have? Some books that I had to read in 6th grade were Tuck Everlasting and The Hatchet. I liked Tuck Everlasting, but not The Hatchet! (It has been a while since I have been in 6th grade, I have to really think about age appropriate books. Especially because the books I chose to read were usually at a higher reading level!)
I did a search and found this list of 6th grade books. It is pretty extensive. I didnt see any that I had read, but it might give you some ideas. http://www.santaclaracountylib.org/kids/lists/all/6th.html#s
Good luck!
