Have you ever adopted a pet from an animal shelter?

I was curious about just how many people had done this. I mean, you always hear about animal shelters being too full with pets and not being able to handle the ones they have, so I wonder how many people actually are adopting from them?Of course, I had never adopted from one until yesterday. All of our pets had either been strays, from one of our litters, adopted from another family member, or gotten accidentally. We actually won one of our dogs in a raffle. xD Second place prize was an American Eskimo puppy from a litter. We wanted the first place prize of $5,000...lol. We've only ever bought one dog and that was our pug because my mother had a pug growing up and she always wanted a black one.
But yesterday my fiance and I finally made the decision to go to the animal shelter and pick out a cat, since our landlords finally gave us the ok to do so. We ended up coming home with one year old "Lenny", who we have renamed "Asriel". He is currently hiding under the bed and only comes out once in a while. He's starting to get used to us, though. I just spent the past five minutes rubbing his chin and petting him. ^_^
So I was wondering, have you ever adopted a pet from a shelter? If so, what did you adopt and what made you choose that one?
When we saw Asriel, he reminded us both of my cat from back home, Pendragon, and Jake's cat from home, Dante (both of which look similar and act similar) and so we knew that he was going to be the one for us!

I had a Golden retriever that was a pound puppy, we had her for 14 years, she was a great dog. My fiance has a orange tabby cat he got from the animal shelter. He has had him for 2 years, and he also renamed him from Bob to Blaze. My fiance is a firefighter, hence the name Blaze. lol Blaze is now 3 years old, and is used to just having my fiance around, so he'll have to get accustomed to me. But I am always spoiling my pets, so I'm sure he and I will get along fine. lol Like you, most of my pets have been strays, or from someone that could no longer keep their pet do to moving, etc. We'll both be moving to Texas soon, and not only have to find a place to live, but one that will let us have Blaze there.

My husband and I adopted all of our dogs (we have 3 of them). One of them was from an animal shelter. The other two from families that couldn't take care of them any longer. When we got Thor from the shelter we already had one dog. We were allowed to take her with us so she could meet the dogs they had there to make sure they got along before committing. It was kind of like doggie speed dating! She didn't fight with any of them, but she was just the most playful and interactive with Thor. So we got him. We went with the shelter because there are so many dogs that need homes. That and it's so much cheaper. I think we paid $60 for Thor and he is a beautiful Rotweiller. If we had gone to a pet store it would have been more like $500 for a dog. I would rather spend that money on toys and caring for them and spoiling them than on just aquiring the animal.

Oh, I'm jealous! I've always wanted a Rott! That'll have to wait until we get a house, though. Big dogs on a second floor apartment = trouble. :) But you've got a good point. We decided shelter because it was cheaper and these pets needed a home and we needed a pet, so we thought it worked out well for all parties!

Awwww... welcome home Asriel! :D I haven't adopted a pet yet (in my case it would be a dog because I'm allergic to cats). My sister just adopted a dog from a shelter though... he's a yorkie mix. Very cute little fella with a bit of behaviorial problems but he's starting to settle down. I'll attach a picture that she sent me of him. I'm not ready to get another dog yet (my scottie/bichon mix had to be put down a couple of Christmases ago (he was about 11 years old) and my heart's not ready for a new one at this point) but, when I am, I'll certainly look to adopt one. I'm definitely interested in a mini doxie (dachshund) but I guess time will tell. I hope you guys will be very happy with Asriel:)))

I'm very sorry to hear about your dog. :( We lost one last year and it's hard, but when you're ready you'll know and I hope you find the dog you're looking for.
Your sister's dog is adorable! Do you know what she named it? :)
We're very happy with Asriel...it's just a matter of getting HIM to be happy with US! LOL.

Thanks! I'm hoping I'll just "feel it" or know when I'm ready :D Yep, she named him Brady... I forget what name he came from the shelter with but it was something like Zeus and she didn't like it LOL I notice I made a mistake in my picture description... yeesh :( ... her other dog, Jake, isn't a golden retriever, he's a yellow lab - and the most wonderful, loving dog I've been around in a long time. So obedient and well-trained. If I were to be into larger breed dogs, I'd have one like him in a heartbeat!

I have adopted an animal, a kitten, from a animal shelter. I adopted Tigger, because my nickname is Tigger and I love Tigger and this cat was a long haired orange tabby cat that looked like Tigger to me and that is what we named him.

Last year, I had adopted a shitzu from the animal shelter here. I wanted a playmate for my other dog. Well, she wouldn't sleep in a crate at night as she had to sleep on my bed and I don't allow that. Well, I could deal with that, but when my grandson was trying to pet her, she bit him, so I took her right back to the animal shelter. I wan't going to have a dog in the house that was going to bit a child or anyone else for that matter. I do miss her, but the same day, I took her back to the animal shelter, I went to the mall to the pet store and bought a pomeranian, and I am glad that I did. Well, have a very good day, and happy mylotting.

I enjoyed reading this discussion and noticing how some people really do actually care about people who care for pets. I in fact have adopted multiple pets. Usually ones who are injured and let them recover and then let them back out for adoption. Most of the time if they've recuperate they are adopted instead of left at the shelter.

Yes, I've adopted animals from the animal shelter before, though it's been a while. Mostly cats, but some dogs too. As it happens I got my very first cat from an animal shelter when I was about 8 years old. I've also adopted strays as well.

I have never adopted an animal before from a shelter. But I have taken in stray animals a lot. I have a neighbor that takes in abused animals. My house has 4 dogs, and one cat, gerbil, guinea pig and to many different kinds of fish to count. But I love animals.
