I always tend to think that the parent has some fault in these cases because after all the children can only eat what they are given or what the parents buy.

If you look at most obese kids you will find that the mother is usually obese too.Kids get their eating habits at a very young age. Dr Phil had several programs about obese children and usually the mother is also obese. Parents do have control of what a child eats or what is in the home until a child starts school. When I was in school many many years ago we were taught about healthy eating in what was called health class. Now days it is so easy to run to the fast food place for meals that there are less and less people really cooking.

It isn't just about food. PE and recess have been removed a lot of the schools. Kids aren't allowed to play out side and run around the neighborhoods like they used to either.

I think that the parent has to bear the bulk of the responsibility. Children eat what they are given and what they have access to. If the parent keeps lots of junk food in the house, that's what the kid is going to eat. Parents are responsible for teaching their children good eating habits. They also need to teach children the importance of exercise. But, if parents do not follow good practices in diet and exercise, they cannot teach their children and that leads to overweight kids.

When a child reaches an age of reasoning, I believe that they are partially responsible for what they put in their mouths. Teenagers, even more so. However, parents are also extremely responsible!!
