Do you use a front load washing machine or a top load?

I just ordered a front load washer and dryer pair but I've always used a regular top load washer. I've been reading about them and it seems like the front load machines are a whole different ball game. They are more energy (and space!) efficient but seem to come with a different set of rules! Which type to you prefer and why? If you use a front load washing machine what are some of the pros and cons compared to regular top loaders? Do you use special soap or is that a bunch of hooey?

I use a top load washer. I was looking at a front load washer and dryer where the base is higher so I don't have to bend, but wasn't comfortable investing the money just now.

My mother-in-law has one that's all one unit top and bottom, seems to work fine for her. I like the higher ones because sometimes bending just hurts.

It is nice to have them higher but they sure can be expensive. We have had money for a new set squirreled away for a few years but didn't find a good enough deal until recently. I like the idea of being able to stack them so we can gain a few extra square feet in our tiny utility room.

My washer is top load, dryer is front load. They came with the house, it was part of the deal. I remember my mom having a front load washer when I was little and how fun it was to watch the clothes! She has one now, too, a Neptune set. I'm hoping my w/d will last many more years but I'm holding out for the sonic washers that don't use water or soap. They have them but they are too expensive! As for soap, it's a bunch of hooey. The only reason soap is used is to break the tension of the water so that it can flow through the fabric. You don't need to use as much as they say and you don't need all those additives and special stain fighters most of the time. I use cheap soap, about 2 tablespoons, and my clothes get clean and bright. Especially if I soften the water with baking soda.

I rather suspected it was hooey. The sales guy gave me the big spiel about having to use HE (high efficiency) detergent or you'll destroy your machine and I smiled and nodded through it, and then immediately hit the interweb to do a little research. All it is is a more concentrated soap that you use less of, so why can't you just use 1/4 (or less) of your regular detergent? I never use the full amount anyway and have no problem using less still. They use less water and the tumble motion creates more suds than an agitator does, another reason you MUST use HE soap, but we also have very hard water so suds have never really been a problem. If I see the HE stuff on sale I may try it just to compare but I'm not going to rush out and spend a fortune on it.

I actually use a top load washer. I'm really not sure what the pros and cons are for either or. I usually never use any sort of special soap or anything. I've never owned a front load so I wouldn't know if there are any pros or cons. Sorry for not being any sort of help!

The biggest reason we got the front loads is so we can stack them and save a little space in the utility room!

I use the special soap and for a while I did not, use the special soap. It does not take as much and it is the same price. A few things to remember, after you wash and take the clothes out leave your door open, if not it will mildew. I also keep a small towel handy to wipe out the door and the rubber around the seal Leave the dispenser for the soap open as well and clean it every couple of months, as guess what it mildews also. if you do not use the special soap, your washing machine can overspill with suds.. get all over the floor and there is something in the other soap that can clog it up.

I've done a little research on the HE detergent and it sounds like the biggest difference is an additive that suppresses suds. We have pretty hard water here and I almost always use cold water so I think I'll try it with a small amount of regular soap just to see. Mostly because my regular brand was 2 for 1 last week and I stocked up!
