Public Restroom, Knock or Walk?

I went with my husband yesterday to an appointment. It was over a half hour drive to get there, so needless to say by the time we got there, I had to really go. Too much coffee. As he was checking in, I spotted the two doors to the right. Men and Women. I made a beeline to the door, and as I always do, I knocked first and waited for a reply. Nothing. A first that nobody was in the restroom when I really had to go. I'm not even in there about 20 seconds when someone was at the door trying to get in. No knock, no nothing at all. Well, she finally stopped trying to open the door. At this point, I'm thinking she is waiting out there so I'm trying moving as quick as I could. I'm washing my hands now, and there is a knock on the door. This time I answer that I'll be out in just a minute. Next thing I know, the handle is being messed with again. I figure she didn't hear me so I repeat what I've already said. Quiet again. I leave the bathroom, and there was an employee outside with bags of medicine in her hand darting by me to get into the bathroom. Thank goodness for locks, right. How about you? Do you try the door first or knock first for the Public Restrooms?

I try the door, but I don't understand once she found the door locked didn't she stand by the door and wait? Why did she keep trying the door? Maybe she thought it would make you hurry.

I think that's exactly what she was doing, savypat. Rush me, although I was moving as quick as I could. I was probably in there a total of a minute to a minute and a half. I'm also thinking, maybe someone locked the door accidentally at one time and shut it. I don't really know.

If it is a single person public restroom like that, I always knock. When I'm in there, I lock the door behind me to make sure no one walks in while I'm in there. I don't get why people would try the door without knocking because I know that I definitely wouldn't want to walk in on someone in there. I also really don't get why people continue to try opening the door after they find it is locked.

I always lock the door behind me to when I got into a public restroom for a single person. One time, I was in such a rush, that I thought I locked the door but I didn't. I was intruded upon, but my own fault for not making sure the door was locked. So, I always double check the locks on the door just for that fact. You know, I wondered the same thing, because if I find a door locked, I'm not going to stand there and try to keep getting in. Just wait patiently or do what I would of done if it was occupied. See if there was anoher ladies room around.
