Do your kids wear uniforms to school?

Where I live, public school students do not have to wear uniforms to school. I wouldn't mind if they did. Some students don't really dress properly, and some parents don't seem to care how their child dresses. Some kids wear profanity on their t-shirts, or shorts that are far too short for them, or low cut shirts. Students go to school to learn, not to compete in a fashion competition. I think enforcing uniforms would take a lot of pressure off the students and parents. What is your school's dress code? Would you change it if you could?

My son has gone to both types of schools. I did not mind the uniforms so much when he went. It was the fact that they had to wear WHITE shirts that I did not care for. My son was 5 at the time. I had to bleach his clothes every night.

My kids go to a Catholic school so they do have to wear a uniform and I love it! They only have one week left of school and they came home today with a note saying they didn't have to wear there uniform for the rest of the year. This is so odd for their school because they are usually pretty strict about the dress code. They even have uniform socks they have to wear,. Uniforms are very convenient but they are very expensive. Luckily it is a once a year expense, unless someone has a growth spurt.

Yes, the cost of the uniform did cross my mind, but if you think about it, some parents spend a ridiculous amount of money on casual clothes for back to school so that their kids can look fashionable! Heck, a couple hundred dollars just for shoes! My kids get Walmart shoes! And with uniforms you can save them to hand down to younger children. I do that with all my boy's clothes.

My older son wears a school uniform. It is a green sweat shirt and gray trousers. He is 14 years old and at secondary school. My younger son goes to play group because is is only 2 years old. He will wear a school uniform as soon as he reaches primary school at age 4 years old. I am a primary school teacher. I did a teaching practice at a school that didn't ask children to wear a uniform. I could tell how wealthy each family was. Some children came in clothing inappropriate for the weather. Some came dirty clothes or clothing with holes in. The head teacher said "school uniform does not make a better child". Sometimes where I teach now they have non uniform days. The children enjoy that for one day and come in fancy clothing. Many of the girls come in pink dresses and the boys dress in an informal way usually. In my own secondary school days we had to wear a navy blue and white stripped blouse, a navy blue cardigan and a gray skirt. I was glad not to have to wear my own clothes. I think school uniform shows an identity and is wise. I wouldn't change my son's schools dress code.

I was brought up wearing school uniform. In the U.K. then all children wore school uniform as the norm. what I liked about it is that it is a great leveller. You all dress the same so no one knows what economic background you may come from. Out here the children all wear a school unioform until they leave high school. I believe in it and it is a good thing for schools to adopt. You have your other clothes to wear outside of school and your uniform is just for school. I am in total agreement with it

In our city, the public school is the school uniform colors and styles. The private schools uniform colors and styles are different,or more than a number of school uniforms on school logo embroidery.School into the summer and winter dress coat,sports-style uniforms.School uniform is to put an end to the students at the middle of clothes brand comparisons, indicating that the identity of students.

When I was of school age, I wore uniforms all the time... a plaid jumper for 8 yrs in grammar school, and a skirt and blazer for 4 years in High School. As you see, I attended a Parochial School. Did we complain about them... sure...but lo and behold, when I was a Sophmore, the school decided to allow the students a vote on whether or not they should discontinue the ruling of uniforms. And when the results came in, we learned that we all wanted to continue wearing uniforms. The bottom line for us was: no dress competition, we didn't have to spend much money for clothes, and we could still personalize them with our socks, sweathers, and hair accessories. So should all schools have dress codes...parochial or not...YES! I think most families and teens would relish the idea.

My daughter attends public high school and they are instituting uniforms come this fall. I'm all for uniforms, always have been. However, all the parents just received letters in the mail informing us that we have appointments with the uniform supply company, when to show up and to be prepared to put a 25% deposit at the time of order. A huge problem has arisen because, when we were asked to vote on having uniforms, we were not told that the school was going to require every single item of clothing to be purchased from the supply company... and the prices, now that we received the list, are outrageous. If I were buying my daughter a pair of simple, poly-cotton stretch pants in a store, I would not be spending $50 for them, you know? Skirts run at about $60... again, much more than I would spend at retail. Parents have apparently been inundating the school with phone calls and letters -- especially the families where there are multiple siblings in the school. One of my daughter's classmates, their family has 5 kids attending there. Parents have asked if we could purchase some of the items from the supplier and then supplement with items we buy at retail (as long as we fully respect the dress code) and we've been told absolutely not. We're holding our breath to see if the school will meet us part way on this because, if they don't, there are going to be a lot of families that just aren't going to be able to afford it. And no one is saying what will happen then.

That's exactly how I feel too. When I voted favorably for uniforms, I guess I naively expected some flexibility. I was hoping to buy just the appropriate length skirt or a couple pairs of pants from the supplier and then get the other items like white polo/tshirts, socks, etc., from somewhere like Walmart. $24 for a short sleeve polo shirt is not making me very happy at this point LOL

Well I hope it all works out for you. The school really should understand that not everyone can afford those prices!

That doesn't really sound fair. I too have 5 kids, only 3 are in school now, but I certainly couldn't afford those prices! You should be able to buy them wherever you want so long as they're what the school requires. Khaki pants are khaki pants, you know.

Our kids don't have to wear school uniforms either. I think the only one that might have to is the one christian school in town. I think it probably would be a good idea to have uniforms. Especially in our area. a lot of the schools out away from the bigger towns have a huge variety of income levels, and it isn't hard to tell who has what kind of money by what they wear. plus there are the girls who tend to get away with wearing shorts that only come to the bottom of their butt cheeks and tiny little tank tops. but i'm sure if everyone had to wear the same uniform they would still find a way to pick on other kids.

Here in our country, grade school and high school students do wear school uniforms. For me, I would like my kids to have uniforms so as to save their clothes and dresses from wear and tear. And also it would be a bit of a problem for me if my kids would always ask me to buy some clothes for them if they don't want to wear the clothes they've already worn.

Where I am, kids wear school uniforms throughout their schooling years. There is one thing that I have noticed especially with the girls as they get older. They try to take the school uniform and turn it into a fashion statement. One thing which is really good, they still keep it within the school colours.

Hi, my daughter wears a school uniform. I think most schools in the UK have a school uniform. I think this a good thing for many reasons but mostly for me it is easier to have my daughters uniform ready for the week and saves her own clothes wearing out. My daughter is 5 years and this is her first year at school. I was so proud of her on her first day dressed in her school uniform:)

Yeah my kids wear uniforms, just like a parent here, I'm so proud when I see them in their uniforms, especially that I send them to one of prestigious school here in our place. Even public schools here is enforcing students to wear uniforms. Having a school uniform distinguish students, its not about compete in fashion, it's for people awareness to where these kids are learning, or are they students,, etc..

My son wears uniform to school.I agree with you that student go to school to learn and not to show off their clothes. Its easier to dress them in uniforms than casuals. It saves us the trouble of selecting which dress to wear in the morning. It also saves me from fighting with my son.Me and my son sometimes fight over what he should wear.

Well, I've been wearing school uniforms ever since I became a student. I actually don't like it sometimes because it can get so uncomfortable especially with the climate changes here in my tropical country. It can get so hot when it's summer and it's too cold when it's rainy. And sometimes it's so hard to move, it's not flexible enough.

Yes my children have to wear uniforms both in little school and then big school. The uniforms are a little more relaxed than they were when I was in school with polo shirts rather than formal shirts being worn but its still nice. I am glad that they have to wear uniform, I would hate to have the pressure of having to make sure they fitted in with their peers everyday. My children currently wear red jumpers, black trousers and white polo shirts, plain but simple.

See, my idea of a jumper is like a 1 piece pant outfit. I think here those are technically called jump suits, but that's what I think of when I hear jumper.

There is no uniform code where I live, but more of the kids seem to dress pretty sensibly. The boys all seem to wear jeans or joggers with T-shirts. I guess there's more competition to look good amoungst the girls though. I always thought a uniform was a good thing because it took off the pressure to have the latest gear, but my fears here have been pretty unfounded I'm glad to say.

Hey Kat I totally agree with you, even though my son has to wear a uniform everyday because he goes to private school, but my friends kids and my nieces go to public and theres a public school across from me and these kids either look so sloppy not well groomed or to grown with the short shirts and skirts or thier pants sagging. I think public school should also have a uniform code this will be alot easier for the students and parents.

Both of my boys are grown now so this is not something that I have to deal with. However, I do wish that uniforms or more strict codes mandatory when they did attend school. Most of the school districts in my area have implemented the wearing of uniforms now. At least if not a particular "school uniform" they require that pants only be one of two colors (kaki or navy blue) shirts must be of the "Polo" shirt style and can only be solid colors of red, white or blue. Personally, I think uniforms are a good thing as it cuts down on peer pressure and kids just having to have what the next has. It also helps keep parents from having to do battle with their kids on buying expensive shoes and clothing in order for the child to feel "in". Most of the districts however do not require uniforms for high schoolers, though their dress codes are pretty strict.

kids should wear only uniforms to their schools. only then some sort of dicipline will be maintained in the school.
