I am trying to get organized so I can find everything. I bought a label maker and I bought some totes. They filled up fast and now I have a bunch of stuff that Id like to put away but I dont want to spend the money on totes. I know there are other ways of organizing, I just need something I can follow as well as young kids and a kid like hubby. My pantry is overflowing which is nice because we have food but I need to think of some creative ways to get it all in our home. Where can I store food? Where can I store kids toys? How do organized people do it?

first of all you need to purge your home of all the items that you don't really need. once you simplified your home and life it will be easier to organize. you can store extra food in your basement if you have one or garage. as far as toys go, try to store them where your kids play with them. the key to organizing is to utilize the space in your home for how you use it. storing items that you use daily in areas that are hard to get to or put away is pointless and won't help you. make it easy for your kids to put their stuff away on their own. when you organize your home think non-traditional. what i mean is if you use a room in your home for different things make it work for you. some people who don't have a family room might use their dining room for eating, doing homework and computer. organize your rooms that way. don't be afraid of moving furniture into rooms where it can be utilized in a more effective way. don't purchase totes until you know what you need. and also remember the things that should be stored are seasonal items, clothing and sentimental items. anything else that you plan on storing away that doesn't fit into those categories is just clutter.

A few years ago we rented a construction dumpster and filled it with stuff. I cant believe we still have so much left. I know I can live without a lot of it but I am down to the stuff I just dont want to part with. How can I cook with out all my appliances? But do I really need a mixer, blender, toaster and popcorn maker out on my counter? Its a hard line to draw. I need to get three tarps on my lawn like a show, I forget the name, told us to do. Keep, toss and sell or donate. Im gonna toss the kids toys first and then the hubbys things so I can make room for my stuff.

it sounds like you have a plan. by the way i think you are thinking of clean house? but anyway, the key is letting go and not replacing what you let go. put the appliances that you don't use daily into cabinets to free up work space. i know it can be hard in a small space. use shelving if necessary. be creative but do what is going to work for you. good luck.

I just got rid of those things that I didnt need and now I think everything else is a need. It might not be but I cant really decide what to give up. I need to find places to put all the things I have so that we are organized and can find what we need. I have a new labeler because I cant find my old one. Its really a sad cycle. We are mostly organizes but drowning in the last bit of what is left.

Bricks and planks make cheap and easy pantry storage which can be altered to suit. Hang hooks from the ceiling to suspend baskets of produce. Done nicely, these could look good in the kitchen themselves. My favourite storage idea is to make drawers in the stairs, but I guess you need to install those when you install the staircase.

We have a fruit basket hanging from the ceiling. We are also looking at a stand alone pantry closet to make some extra space but we can move it out when we put the house on the market. No one wants to buy a house that we cant fit into, they will thing they cant either.

Do what they do on the show Clean Sweep. Make piles of save, sell, toss and give away. If you haven't worn it, got it out of it's box or turned it on in at least a year, get RID of it. I found when I moved from my house of 18 years to move to florida, I really purged. All this stuff that I thought I had to have, was just stuff. God always provides for what you need and you need to empty the house for more to flow in to you! I use alot of square type baskets in my pantry, closet and bathroom. I download off the computer cute little tags to hang on the outside for the information of what's in the basket. I use trunks not only for storage but also for a mock coffee table in the game room. I keep shoe boxes and use fun wrapping paper to cover them to use as storage of my craft things, hair clips and such. I took all of my appliances off my counter tops so it's a cleaner look and doesn't feel confined. I keep all my appliances now in my cabinets and laundry room on a shelf. Hope this helps.

Covering shoe boxes with cute paper is a great idea. I think I will call around and see if my family will save some boxes for us. We have a small house and a lot of organizing will go a long way. Thank you for the great idea. I will go look for some cute paper tomorrow and get started.
