When sunbathing on the beach do you ever think about skin cancer?

When you're on the beach, sunbathing... getting a nice new tan!
Does it ever come to your mind about skin cancer? Or does it not pass you? Do you get too wrapped up in the 'going on holiday to get a tan' society?
Do you use protective lotions? If so what? What factor?

I don't like to sunbathe but my son likes me to take him to the beach so we follow simple guidelines to be careful. We use a high factor sun protection of 25 and I always take my beach umberella with me. We avoid the heat of the mid day sun and generally head to the beach after 5pm. In Greece the Greek people are used to the sun and usually are much whiter than the tourists who burn on the beach and sit out in it all day, we tend to become tan around the arms and shoulders just through being exposed to the sun when doing daily things outside but never deliberately try to cultivate a tan. We are aware of the dangers of skin cancer and always try to be sensible, I think people from less glorious climates like the UK tend to pack all their years son into a two week holiday and will probably pay for it at a later date sadly.

Statistics show that more and more young people are being diagnosed with skin cancer.
When I was a teen in the early 70s, I stayed in the sun, I really liked having a tan because it made me feel covered. I live in the south and it's pretty hot here. I preferred shorts and a tank-tops back then.
Now that I'm in my early 50s I can see where my skin was been damaged by the sun. Actually, I decided to try a tanning bed one summer and I could actually see my skin being damaged over the weeks. I think tanning beds are a lot worse then the sun.
I would advise anyone these days to use some kind of sun-block. I still like a tan, nowadays I'll use a little of that 'tan in a can' as I like to call it. I put a little of that on my legs to knock down the white a notch.
Do I regret my suntanning days? No, we have to live in the moment, I did back then and I try to now. I would have wrinkled eventually anyway and I did go to my dermatologist awhile back just to be checked over to make sure everything was as it should be, and it was.
