Hi guys. I was looking into Medical Transcription. I'm a really good typer and whatnot and I am looking for something that I can do online that will help me earn some extra money and then eventually I want to go full time if I can make enough money doing it so then I can go back to school to get a degree in nursing. Has anyone done medical transcription before? One of my friends gave me a site called career step that supposedly teaches you all about medical transcription and whatnot. What do you guys think of this idea? The course to become certified is about $1300...so it's not TOO bad but I just don't want to spend that money and not be able to get any jobs out there. I need advice on what to do!!!

Well, your profile says you live in Florida and there are many community colleges there. One of them probably offers the program on campus or online at much less cost. You might want to check that out before shelling out $1300. If you want to become a nurse, you might want to look at medical assisting instead. Now for this program most colleges will have a 1 or 2 year program. If you can find a private college that can offer this in less time, it might be worth spending the extra dollars. The training for a medical assistant is more closely related to nursing than a transcriptionist. If you elect to be a transcriptionist, then maybe a more logical career path for you might be health information technology/medical records specialist. They are also in demand and have decent salaries.

I think there are lots of people who are working as medical transcription. Medical transcription has created lots of opportunities all over the world. I think one should undergo at least six months of training to become a professional in medical transcription.

taking MT is good. but paying that much is not reasonable. i am a unregistered nurse and also took transcription. taking transcription is not an assurance to have client immediately. it realy depends how well you are and how lucky you are to have clients. my advice is don't gamble your money. i think there are schools that offer less. being an transcriptionist is a stressful job, just like being a student nurse. pressure from the client or to the contructor is always there.

I am working as a medical transcriptionist. It takes lots of a person and a person needs to under some stress. Overall, it is a very good job an gives lots of job satisfaction. I would suggest you to go to companies, which provide training for medical transcription. Some companies do give opportunities after the training.

Career step is great. Its medical transcription course is one of the few that are accredited by the Association for Healthcare Documentation or AHDI.

If you are from US then it will be difficult for you to get a good paying job in this field.More and more hospitals and other health care organizations are outsourcing this job to asian countries, especially India, where labour is cheap.
