What kind of things did you try to catch when you were a kid?

I just got back from a nice long weekend with my b/f's family in Indiana. They have a wonderful place with a lake and a pnd on their property. My youngest daughter spent almost all of her time in a paddle boat hunting frogs and turtles..feeding the coy. It made me think of myself as a child "hunting" things. So what do your children hunt and catch? What did you hunt and catch as a child.

I don't think I had hunted anything but yes, I was fond of catching butterflies. Once I have used a thred to a butterfly so that she will be with me all the times but somehow she got rid of it and get away in the air.
Catching rat was one of the thing which i did in my house. My mum used a small cage to catch them and my job was to leave that rat at the beaches!

Ooooh, bugs! I loved looking for and catching all kinds of things.
Lightning bugs (fireflies), salamanders, newts, frogs, tadpoles, turtles, worms, garter snakes, anything as long as it didn't bite!
We lived near a stream and wooded area that was ripe with all kinds of creepy crawlies and us kids would sometimes make a day of seeing who could catch the most. I had so many unusual "pets" that my parents dreaded seeing me heading off to the stream.
Your daughter would LOVE our place now. We have frogs, tadpoles and turtles galore! Someone (no one has fessed up to it) has released a goldfish into our lake and it stays around the area of our property where all the neighbors come to fish. It may be a koi but it looks more like a plain old regular goldfish to me.
I can't say anything about someone putting a goldfish in our lake because, when we first moved here, one of the first things I did was to release three rivercooters (actually two words but myLot doesn't like one of them), which are water turtles, into the lake. They had hatched out of my back yard three years earlier and I had them in a 75 gallon fish tank but they were rapidly outgrowing it. So, in the lake they went. They've now had babies of their own. I love going down there and seeing the newest babies, and can't believe how large the ones I had put in there have gotten! The coolest thing is that they all stick around the spot where I had put them into the lake from, even though they have a really HUGE "fish tank" to swim around in now.
But, we also have box turtles and tree frogs. We have what sounds like hundreds of water frogs that just hang out in the water along the banks but also brown tree frogs all over the place.

Thanks for taking me back to my childhood and thanks for the BR. Who would've thought that all the fun I had way back when would earn me a BR one day! LOL
I've noticed a little bunny rabbit lately, hanging around the front of our property. I've shooed him (her?) away a couple of times, but noticed that it's just nibbling on the clover and hasn't yet found the smorgasbord (my veggie garden) I planted out back, so I'm leaving it alone now. I saw him/her lounging in the middle of our private road yesterday, just chillin. I guess it had it's fill of clover for the time being. It's so adorable!
I haven't seen any deer so far this year, but normally deer walk all around here. I've put up barracades to keep the deer from destroying my fruit trees, but only on one section of our property. The deer can roam around where there's no barricade, but I haven't seen any this year. I've told my husband that I think his really mean cat probably killed them all or they're deathly afraid to come near our house anymore because of her. She's the meanest kitty I've ever even heard of! She only weighs about 4 or 5 pounds, but it's all pure meanness!
We used to have an otter living in our lake but I haven't seen him this year, either. He may have migrated down to the south end of the lake (we live at the north end).
This place is a veritable wildlife wonderland. Maybe that's why I love it here so much... it takes me back to my childhood.
Thanks for such a wonderful post! I've thoroughly enjoyed my trip down memory lane.

Sounds like you have an awesome place! I'd love to see those turtles of yours..lol..I still have enough kid in me that I love to see what she's after next. My granparents used to dread seeing what I would come dragging in too. Thanks for sharing and take care.

Hi Jen! I caught pollywogs, tree frogs, caterpillars, salamanders, and potato bugs while I was growing up. There's probably some others, but I can't remember at the moment. Nowadays I help my kids catch ladybugs, butterflies, and even spiders and snakes from time to time.

Lightening bugs were the thing we tried to catch when we were children. my children did the same & now when my grandson comes we catch them to. we also had a big time other day catching lady bugs. he really enjoys being outside when he is here. needless to say weather permitting that is where we are when he comes.

Down here in Texas we don't see a lot of lighting bugs. When I went to Virginia for the first time, I went out quite a few nights to try to catch them. I also made my own ant farm, and went turtle and lizard hunting

My step brother and I used to catch grasshoppers in the field behind our house and then sell them. Did pretty well one summer. Then I found a tree across the street from my grandmothers house that was just covered with little tree frogs. One summer in Pocatello there were so many june bugs in the lawns in our neighborhood we could scoop them up and go scare people with them. They would make a weird noice and would freak some people out.

I was a bit of a tomboy when I was little and I loved going to the creek that was in our backyard in Michigan to catch frogs! I don't know why, but, I just loved feeling a frog in my hands. Their cold bodies touching my skin was such a treat for me. I always felt so lucky to have caught them. I was never mean to them. I would just catch them, pet them and just sit and observe them. If they struggled too much I would let them go. That was so much fun for me.

I could not exactly remember what were really my hobby during my early childhood. What I remembered most was during my juvenile years, my elementary years. We used to catch fish on a swamp water. In fact, in our province (Philippines), during summer season, we used to dry-up some swamps and ponds in order to catch different fresh water fish. Oh that was fun! How I wish I could turn back the time and go back again those very wonderful years in my childhood. Sometime we even skipped from our classes just for pond fish-catching with our classmates...Crazyyyyyyyyy!
Do you have any idea how we can turn back the time?

Jen-
I loved being in nature as a child, still enjoy it. As a child I used to catch fireflies, butterflies, etc. I never kept them, but to catch them and watch them was wonderful. Used to hunt down caterpillars and grasshoppers as well.
My own children love nature as well. Today our son watched a catapillar making his way across the mat outside. So, we handled it gently, watched it play, and then moved it to the tree so the catapillar could go enjoy some tasty leaves.

Heyya Anora! I have always loved nature as well. I'm glad she does too. We always let her little creatures go too. Sometimes I have to "talk" her into it..lol..because she loves them all and wants to keep them. I have to teach her that loving them is freeing them. Thanks for responding.

Hello JenInTN, your post did remind me of my childhood. I got a sweet memory when I am still a children. I remember that I loved to climb up the small hill behind my grandpa's house and catch some insects like butterfly and grasshopper and playing with the sand......how I wish that I am still a children!!!

Amongst Grasshoppers, I hunted for worms. In my neighborhood, I was the Tomboy...hung around with the boys, and did what they did. They hunted for worms so I joined them. I actually loved it when I would get a long fat slimy one. I don't remember what we actually did with them once we found them, because I don't recall anyone who went fishing. I think we just put them in a pile before we retired for the day. But, Mom used to get frustrated with me when I would come in for the day with hands covered with mud, and track it all over the house. She'd take one look at me, and head me for the bathtub, and the water was often black when I was done. Childhood was fun.

Because I live in the desert my kids hunt and bring home, snakes, scorpions, spiders large and small, lizards, vinagaroons, and other various bugs and interesting specimens. they usually catch them in a mason jar and then bring them for identification on the internet. It is a wonderful learning opportunity for them. I am origiaonally from Indianapolis Indiana and when I was young and we used to visit the family we used to catch lizards, and injured birds, and every night we would catch glowworms, lightning bugs, or fireflies to use as a nightlight, then in the morning we would take the jars out and let them go.

my brother and I used to bring home all sorts of creatures. Frogs, toads, tadpoles, minnows, salamanders etc. If we stumbled upon a hurt creature....we'd bring it home and try to nurse it back to health. Field mice, turtles & my brother was forever bringing home snakes...ugh! At one point I collected spiders in baby food jars...don't know how my mom survived us as she really did not care for most of these creatures and we were forever trying to sneak them inside.

It was tadpoles for us. We used to go to the stream with jam jars, and fish for them. Then we used to put them in the pond in our garden and watch them grow. In the summer we would go rock pooling at the beach and look for small fish and tiny moluscs. Happy days!
