How long would you like to travel for?

When I was younger I loved going on long trips on several months and my longest trip lasted just over one year. Now I am older and I have children and dogs I travel for much shorter periods like just two weeks. Even so I can pack quite a lot of activity into fourteen days. How long would you like to travel for and why? How long was your longest trip away from home? Where did you go on that?

I do think that long trips are preferable (for me) to the short see all of the cities in Europe in 7 days kind of trip. I enjoy experiencing and learning about foreign cultures by actual living in that culture. My longest trips in the past have been associated with jobs that took me to Alaska for three years and to South America for a year. In recent years, the best I could do was travel for two weeks at a time once a year. Most of my trips have been to Asia/Oceania (China, Philippines, Japan, New Zealand, etc). In those two weeks I spent a lot of time trying to get a good feel for one or two places rather than trying to pack a lot of cities in. I was actually sizing those places out for retirement. If I could walk away knowing where a few restaurants, a couple good malls, the local markets, interesting parks/zoos/museums, and could navigate my way around a city or two, I felt like I accomplished a lot. Now that I'm retired, I'm planning to move overseas and set up a home base abroad in Asia. Then I'll be able to travel more frequently on my retirement budget. So now my plan is to "travel" for as long as my two feet can carry me from place to place. My new home within the next 2 months will be the Philippines. Haha ... my goal is to run into Bourdain or Zimmern at some restaurant one night and share a few fried insects with them.

Thanks for your wonderful response which I very much enjoyed reading. I spent a couple of months traveling around Europe by train when I was 18 years old. I managed to see more on trips years later. In two weeks I can explore two or three European countries. It must have been exciting for you to spend a year in South America. Sizing a place out for retirement must be an excellent thing to do. You are sure to have a lovely time in the Philippines. I am pleased you enjoy longer trips.

The longest time I was away was around a month in Paris which was some years ago already. I still want to go for a trip that takes me months but it is not that easy now as I have got a job and asking for a leave that takes months (actually not even a month). It is understandable that if you have kids or pets, you would not want to leave home for too long as soon you will start to get worried about them and you won't enjoy the trip in full anyway.

I am a primary school teacher and in my younger days I could travel for all six weeks of the summer holidays. Then I took a few fixed teaching contracts so I went off traveling between two of them. Like I ended one post in November and went off to New Zealand coming home in March the next year. I can see with your current job a couple of months away wouldn't be possible. That is why retirement is so great. I know some retired people that go away every winter for months.

I'll answer your question in a different way. I wish there was such a thing as rent-a-dog, then I could take on with me on my trip around Australia. I miss not having a dog period. And especially the two who were poisoned a couple of years ago. I still love to travel.

I havent travel outside my country. If I will travel I like to spend 1 week or more in that place so I could visit many great places there and also took some photos. The longest time I travel was only one week with my freind. It was summer we decided to go to the beach.

My longest trip away from home was 3 weeks but, I would love to do longer! I would ideally like to go and travel across america for 4 weeks taking in all the states and different enviroments and cultures but, I am not sure if that will happen anytime soon! x

i like to travel for one to two weeks usually..because too long will make me more exhausted..the first time you reach the place it looks wonderful..but after some days..you also will feel tired..because the days before you already use all the energy to play and looking around the places..and photo shooting is the most important thing..this is what i usually like to do when i go for traveling..taking photos for memories..
